Unable to connect to internet WITHOUT the router

I'm having a rather strange issue. I've been getting slow downloads on Fileplanet for the last several weeks, so I checked their support page and it said to try disconnecting the router and download with the modem connected directly to the computer. So, I did that, all the lights were lit on the cable modem showing that it was connected to the ISP and communicating with the PC. However, after entering Windows, I was unable to connect to anything online. After that, I reconnected the modem to the router and I could use the internet normally. I repeated the process again and the same thing happened.

My ISP is Adelphia, I'm using a Terayon 700x series cable modem and the router is a WRT54GL with DD-WRT v.23 firmware.

I'd appreciate and suggestions or possible explanations.

Thanks.

did you power cycle the modem? If not, that is the problem.

The ISP's DHCP server has given out an IP address to the router for this session, and could care less about your computer. No IP address, no internet.
If you power cycle the modem after connection the computer, the ISP's DHCP server will give your computer a different IP.

did you release/renew the internet connection on your computer? is it set to "obtain address automatically"?

The authentication is probably done with the Router MAC number, and the computer has a different MAC number.

I'll mess around with it in a second and let you know what happens.

Apparently, I forgot to do that. Anyway, it works now with the modem directly connected to the PC.

Thanks a lot.

no problem. This is such a pain to do when it involves breaking everything to try and fix it. Very time consuming:)
