UN Watch Director: UN is human rights nightmare

Of course, such comments are deemed "inadmissible" . The UN Human Rights Commission is a sad joke. They just passed two more resolutions criticizing Israel (the only country they have ever criticized), but still won't pass a resolution on Darfur. They are a joke, and merely a tool to countinously bash no one else but Israel.

The UN's Human Rights Commission has been told it is a hypocritical and prejudiced body which does nothing to help millions of people in need, due to its obsessive focus on demonizing Israel.

In a speech given during a session of the Human Rights Commission on March 23rd, Hillel Neuer, Director of UN Watch, delivered a scathing attack on the commission's track record, describing it as a "human rights nightmare."

Responding to the speech, the Council President Luis Alfonso De Alba said Neuer's speech fell short of "minimum proper conduct," adding that Neuer's comments were "inadmissible."

"Six decades ago, in the aftermath of the Nazi horrors, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rene Cassin, and other eminent figures gathered here on the banks of lake Geneva to reaffirm the principle of human dignity," Neuer said during his address.

"What has become of this noble dream?" he continued, adding: "In this session we see the answer. Faced with compelling reports from around the world, of torture, persecution, and violence against women, what has this council pronounced, what has it decided? Nothing."

"Its response has been silence. Its response has been indifference. Its response has been criminal. One might say, in Harry Truman's words, that this has become a do nothing, good for nothing council," Neuer added.

"But that would be inaccurate," he continued. "This council has, after all, done something. It has enacted one resolution after another, condemning one single state: Israel. In eight pronouncements, and there will be three more this session, Hamas and Hizbullah have been granted impunity. The entire rest of the world; millions upon millions of victims, in 191 countries continue to go ignored," Neuer said.

"So yes, this council has done something. And the Middle East dictators who orchestrate this campaign will tell you, it is a very good thing?. But do these self-proclaimed defenders really care about Palestinian rights?" Neuer asked.

"Let us consider the past few months. More than 130 Palestinians have been killed by Palestinian forces. This is three times the combined total that were the pretexts of calling special sessions in July and November? Little three year-old boy Salam Balusha and his two brothers were murdered in their car by Prime Minister Haniyeh's troops. Why has this council chosen silence? Because Israel could not be blamed," Neuer declared.

"Because in truth, the despots who run this council couldn't care less about Palestinians or any human rights. They seek to demonize Israeli democracy. To delegitimize the Jewish state. To scapegoat the Jewish people. They also seek something else. To distort and pervert the very idea of human rights."
"You ask, what has become of the founders' dream? Mr President, with terrible lies, and moral inversion, this council is turning that dream into a nightmare," Neuer concluded.

"For the first time in the session ever, I won't express thanks to his statement," Council President De Alba said, with an agitated expression.

"I will not tolerate any similar statements in the council... all of this is inadmissible? I would urge you in any future statement to observe some minimum proper conduct and language. Otherwise any similar statements in tone will be stricken from the records," he added.

Bravo, Mr. Neuer.

Bravo indeed.

Bravo to the Bush adminstration for not seeking a seat on this travesty of a council too.

They should name it the UN Israeli hate council

The UN Human Rights Commission definitely sux.

But so do the actions of Israel, Hamas, Hezbollah, Jordan, Syria, Iran, Egypt, USA, Russia, China, (put virtually any African country HERE), (put virtually any Central Asian country HERE), China, DPRK . . .

That sounds pretty sad, but I have not heard the defense.

the difference being that Israel is the only country whose actions are taken up EVERY sessions by the UN council because of rules they passed. In other words they single out Israel because the UN as a whole has become nothing more than a "get Israel" club.

The council passed eight resolutions condemning Israel.
Do you know how many they passed condemning the other country's in your list?
Or any other country besides Israel?
Zero.
That should tell you all you need to know.

Umm. Didn't they just criticize Iran for something. Been criticizing (and starving) Iraq for a long time, to the point that your average Iraqi hates UN's guts.

Most rational people in America realize that the United Nations is a corrupt organization full of dictatorships that have nothing but contempt for human rights. By its very nature, the UN operates by a "consensus" drawn upon a nonjudgmental mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Yet the UN-Lovers tell us that cooperation with this unsavory crowd is essential for America's well-being.

Every year we bear witness to outrageous acts and proclamations from the UN, but it's always business as usual: Worthless politics as usual from a motley crew of misfits from every shady country in the world.

Maybe they feel guilty for creating the nation of Israel which has led to all the strife in the M.E.

Good point.

They've ignored this critism like they've ignored the many serious violations of human rights and the resultant victims.

It seems that the U.N. finds it far easier to ignore problems than address them, especially it's own problems.

EDIT: It's sad to such a nobley intended body become so disfunctional and perverted.

Bravo, Mr. Neuer.

The UN will always disappoint you if you forget what they were created for. It' sin the very beginning of their charter: avoid war between great powers. In doing that they were (and are) remarkably successful.

For anything else, the UN are just as good as their member states. They are an arena, not an actor. It's politics. Nasty politics actually. Many countries see human rights concerns as a possible way for other powers to interfere in the sphere of their sovereignty, and behave accordingly.

Want to know why they don't pass anything on Darfur? To avoid the political empasse of calling for intervention just to see that no country is interested in sending military in the country. The UN has no its own army. In the charter it was supposed to, but then do you know what happened? It's member states (all 5 permanent members) always rejected the idea so to keep the monopoly of the use of force.

Again, they are only as good as their member states.

If you want to see the good side of the UN you need to look at the constellation of UN-linked organism and agencies, doing an amazing job in every possible corner of the world, usually with little funding and in very dangerous conditions. The glass building in NY is the worst the UN has to show.

What I find revealing, although hardly suprising, is the fact that aside from the Israeli media, this speech was not reported in any mass media outlet.

No, that was the now defunct Human Rights Commission. Libya was a member, it had a rotating leadership IIRC. But yeah, that was ridiculous.

This council is supposed to be the new and improved UN Human Rights group. Looks like the same old thing all over again.

Maybe the focus is so much on Israel because their oppression and illegal treatment of the palestinian people is the leading cause for all the trouble in the world leading us to WW3?

Yup, sure did. Israel was behind the killing of nearly 1 million sunnis and shites when they started the Iran Iraq war. I think they even got Saddam to invade Kuwait for them by proxy! Their chemical attacks on the Kurds while disquised as Iraq Republican Guard was the best yet.

Yeah, sure.

or the fact that the muslim countries banded together? Go look at the wars and abuses going across the world today? How many involve Israel? How many involve Muslim countries.

Oh, I am quite sure it must be the eveel jews killing all those people in Dafur. They probably have eveel mind control machines in Somalia too. Hell there must have been Israelies driving the tanks that ran over protesters in China!!!! Yeah, Yeah, thats the ticket.

Ignorance abounds here

Always the Jews fault eh?

Darfur dwarfs the palestinian situation in scope and body counts.

Good job twisting a criticism of Israel into an antisemitic comment. It's getting pretty lame though. I didn't say anything about Jews, I said Israel oppresses the Palestinians in violation of international law. That's a fact. Now learn to really *think* about a problem instead of stupidly choosing a side and crying and whining the same tape over and over again.

As for Darfur, yes it's a human tragedy, but unfortunately no one cares about it, just like Rwanda. No money to be made there, no strategic interests, and no concern of it turning into a global conflict. And by the way, no, darfur doesn't dwarf the palestinian situation in scope. That genocide didn't push anyone to fly planes in buildings, cause wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Israel costing a countless number of lives, crippled the US economy along with all its civil liberties, and I could go on.

Curiously, Darfur dwarfed Iraq as well . . . didn't matter though, eh?
