UN urges circumcision in AIDS-hit southern Africa

Text

Several recent medical studies have reported circumcision cuts the risk of HIV infection among men by 50-60 percent, and the findings have been backed by UNAIDS.

"These (African) countries should now prepare how to introduce circumcision on a large scale," UNAIDS chief Dr. Peter Piot told Reuters. "The science is clear."

Baby boys should be targeted first but then attention should switch to adolescent boys and adult men, said Piot, who is in New Delhi to meet Indian officials on how they plan to tackle the world's largest HIV/AIDS caseload

Oh that's a great idea. Let's teach these Africans that cutting a piece of your dick off is the cure for AIDS.

Yeah, that outta go over reeaal well. They already think we invented it and sent it over there.

Why not? Over a decade of preaching condom use and less risky sexual practices have failed miserably.

Urging them to do ANYTHING that can cut the rate of transmission is a damn good idea.

ok, cool, but thats only slowing the spread of AIDs

Which is a bad idea... why?

He's not saying it's a bad idea. But it does nothing to educate the population of the dangers or alter the culture. All the cultural and behavioral factors contributing to the disaster are still in place.

Besides. As an adult male, would you volunterily circumcise yourself? Didn't think so.

If anyone says this is a reason to circumcise in the United States *cough*EVERY NEWS SOURCE OUT THERE*cough*, I'm going to flip.

I understand that. However a deacde of education attempts have failed misserably.

I also understand that it will be difficult, if not impossible to convince the adult population to do it to themselves. However, if we start with babies today we should be able to seriously slow the spread within a generation.

This is a reason to circumcise in the United States.

Sorry, it sounded like a dare.

At any rate, the low rate of circumcision among American blacks may very well be a contributing factor to that population having such a disproportionately high rate of infection.

I have to agree. Maybe the thought of getting snipped will encourage them to change their behavior instead. The men, anyway.

i don't get it, if your cut or uncut, you still transfer bodily fluids during sex right? so how does this prevent it?

It doesn't hurt to try but I doubt it will do any good. If you're having unprotected sex regularly with an infected person (circumcised or not) you're going to get infected. Even with a 50% reduction in probability, you'll still get infected. It's a pretty desperate move if you ask me.

Actually, in that culture men usually get it from rapes or prostitutes and bring it home.

And you are incorrect. The rate of female to male transmission is already very low. Cutting it by 50+% would make a HUGE difference.

I recall hearing on npr that nearly 2/3 of men over there are already circumcised, depending on what regeion/country they are in. In a country where circumcision is the norm the rate of infection has never ogtten over 5-7%, whereas countries where it is not the norm are sitting at 25%+

Uncut penis is a lot better during sex than a cut penis .. ask any girl who has had both!

Every girl I have ever asked has told me they prefer circumcised.

I said contributing, not sole cause. I'm sure there are many reasons for the disproportionately high rate of infection. Doing anything to cut that rate is a GOOD thing.
