No, he's an accused rapist and should stand trial for it since it's likely he'll lose. In an ideal world Sweden will change their laws against trials in abstentia. Then they won't need to take him into physical custody to convict his ass like he richly deserves and he'll never make it out of Swedish jail to be extradited to the U.S. The "enemy of the state" stuff is bullshit and the U.S. should publicly declare that Assange won't be put on trial for the supposed crime of being a journalist.

Somehow I doubt the police were stationed just outside the embassy at all times just to nail an alleged rapist.

They are. MET police wait outside the Ecuadorian embassy 24/7 racking up overtime. People post pictures of them on twitter all the time.
