Ok here's my problem. I turn on my computer, leave the room for a min. come back and I don't hear the fan making noise and see a little smoke so I quickly turn off the computer. I took off the fan to look at the cpu and it's a little dark on one of the corners; I have a duron. I get a different fan and put the cpu back in with it and turn on the computer. It starts to run for a while but nothing shows up and after about 15 sec. the computer turns off. I take out the cpu and fan and try to start the computer without them and the computer starts just for a split second then turns off again. Anyone know what could be up? I'm guessing my cpu is done for.

Yep. I suspect your CPU is toast. Sorry. :(
Nice reason for an upgrade though. :D

unless you have a spare chip to test...i'd pretty much say it's a loss

what went wrong is the question..did you use a good thermal grease like arctic silver? was the HSF on properly?

how long DID the computer work before it burned up? what mobo do you have?

I didn't use any thermal grease; never needed to. The fan had been making some weird noises the past week so I guess it was just going. I don't think the mobo is shot since it does get temporary power if only for a second. I just need a new cpu and fan I think.

Absolutely correct, Just a CPU and a fan for the hs. If you have a bios alarm for high temp and low fan rpm in your mobo make sure it's enabled to prevent the same thing from happening again.
