umm, whats up with the ads taking up useful space

I can understand the desire to squeeze out every last penny, but come on now. Those ads on the left are just completely annoying.

I'm sure I'll be censured or get a nice 'vacation' for saying this, but someone has to say it. That ad bar along the left is just annoying and totally messes up the view I had of the forum entries. (Edited to not be so harsh).

I don't think that those ads are that bad. AT needs to make money somehow, so they can stay online and not charge us anything for using it.

Ditto, but I guess AT has to make money somehow. God knows less than 1% of people actually click on anything and considering the amount of traffice this site gets, the bills get expensive. It's annoying, but understandable.

Amen. Subscribing is cheap. Quit whining. I haven't seen the ad, but that's cause I paid the fee that I more than make up in a year getting to deals faster than you non-subscribers.

Well, it's kind of chicken and eggish, or even a Catch-22. If it weren't for the users, there wouldn't be anything to read on the server and no one would come here. If it weren't for the server, there wouldn't be anything to read either.

Anyway, I think AnandTech tries to find the balance between providing a "free" service and not going out of business. I'm not fond of the sidebar either, but I can choose to renew my membership if it gets too bothersome.

Beggars can't be choosers, I guess. And AnandTech won't fold if I leave all in a huff.
