I just looked out the back door and there's this wierd looking bug sitting on the outside window part. Never seen anything like it so I took a picture just now.

Here's the bug

Any idea what this thing is?

edit, getting lighter out, figured I'd try another picture
It Has WINGS!

edit 2 - well it appears to be a female bearded robber fly as the one seen here. Thanks goes to ucdnam

Looks like a cross between a dragon fly and a mosquito.... I'd suggest running for cover....

Oh, I read about those. A few months ago there was an article about how the government was experimenting with Bio-warfare technology... using genetically altered insects to wipeout enemies, etc.

Basically it's a hybrid of a mesquito and common house fly. They infect the embryos with a type of nerve poision, and then the hatchlings try and suck your blood and transfer the poison. Theoritcally will kill out an entire city of people, but their lifespan is very short like a fly, only the males are released because the females only grow under-produced wings (so they basically crawl) - so breeding them is very controlled. Since they use a synthetic neve poision (which doesn't affect the fly-quitos) there is no risk of it spreading. The fly-quitos die in a few days.. any animal that eats them will die too... it's a very controlled scenario. The contingency plan is that since this insect is part fly, it is prone to the same fungus that kills them all off every year... so by any chance they lose control of this thing and it does manage to reproduce and spread, it gets killed out by Winter.

Why is this thing in your house? :Q

you could have done a little better than that if you're going to make up a believable story

Looks to be a dragonfly larvae, maybe just came out of the water ? The thorax is large and the wings are just forming, but you can't really tell. The antennae are quite large for dragonflies though, but if you really are inquisitive, i can pass the images onto an entomologist for you and we'd know real quick.

Whelp, I asked an entomologist from UC Davis, where I work and went to school, what it was and she said it's a female Robber Fly. Here's a page about them http://rbcm1.rbcm.gov.bc.ca/end_species/species/robfly.html

Guess they're endangered, but yea, that diagram looks like your gal.

http://www.sandseekers.net/html/bugs.html Whoa, these guys actually prey on horse and deer flies, which is amazing, considering those two are huge as well. You want to stay away from Deer Flies and Horse Flies, something I learned in my Entomology classes :)

Good one. :D

I think ucdnam is right - first thing I thought was that it's a robber fly.
I caught some kind of beetle once - it's about 2" long, and it makes this little squeaking noise when it's held.

Wow, thanks! Feeling better now, glad I didn't squish it if its endangered :Q
The Bearded Robber Fly often overtakes horse flies or deer flies in flight, whirring at high speed. It captures them and sucks them dry while standing on a leaf or twig!
that's awesome, wow. good going fly.

and yes, this picture of the robber fly looks almost identical to what I saw, but mine had a longer stinger type of deal, quite longer.

I was just about to say its a Robber Fly.

We have them all over the place here. Just a carnivorous(sp?) fly.

That is terrifying! Something out of a 50's movie or such. I hate anything that flies and bites/stings. My friend once cut a horsefly in half with scissors, it was classic.
