I'm having an issues with this USB scanner on a client's computer. The version of software that came with the computer would not recognize that the scanner was even there, and Windows built in support would not scan anything either.

The U.S site for Umax won't let you download VistaScan 3.55, but the UK site will. I got it from the UK and the appropriate windows XP patch as well.

Now it recognizes the scanner, but it will scan nothing but blank or muttled pages. The scanner was working perfectly fine before I installed Windows XP for them a month ago.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Will the VistaScan 3.55 from europe not function correctly on a U.S. machine? Somehow I can't believe that's it, but I'm not getting anywhere and i want them to be able to scan.

Did you try using the WIA driver for the scanner versus the vistascan?

This is a funny coincedence though, I was just setting up a new Visioneer 9220 for a client this afternoon who gave up on the their 2100U. I had to do the same thing to get it set up (use the european version of vistascan and the patch), but found it still to be flakey under WinXP.

It still sometimes needed unplugged from power and replugged back in or it would scan all black images.

The WIA driver seems to work better, but that thing will always be a headache for them I fear.

Windows built in WIA support would not scan before or after I installed the old version of the software, and it would scan a blank page after I installed the 3.55 vistascan.

Try unplugging the USB cable, then unplugging the power to the scanner (to reset its brain). Plug the USB cable back in and then plug the power in and let windows redetect the scanner.

After that you may have to reboot if you currently have the vistascan software in as that software needs to boot with windows for the scanner to work half the time (or all the time).

P.S. I noticed until I got that right, it even seemed to bang the bottom of the scanner at the end of the scan pass before it returns. After it started working all was well.

Also did you install the software with the scanner unplugged and virus scanners off?
