has anyone used ultraVNC before??

ultravnc.sf.net

Its got lots of great features. but i was curious about its security. it supports winNT/2k logons and domains and supposedly runs on top of the usual NT authentication so its not vulnerable to the same password cracking programs that NT is. but, im guessing passwords are sent as plain text so they are interceptable.

does anyone know more about this prog or used it? what do u think about it security?

I haven't actually used UltraVNC, but I'm guessing it sends passwords using plaintext. If you really want it to be secure, you can create a secure SSH tunnel between the client and the server, then everything (including password info) would be encrypted.

I've used VNC products before (though not this one specifically). Work well for the intended use.

It's security is as good as that in NT/2000/XP. Take that for what it's worth ;)

I like Sunbelt's Remote Administrator 2.1 better myself. We got a site license for it at work, it seems quite a bit more responsive compared to VNC.

i would think if u run it as a service and keep your PC locked all the time that would add a little bit more security right?

I would also like to know how to do that. I will be away at school next year and this would be convenient for checking in on my computers at home while I'm at school.

ssh would only protect the data being sent between the two computers, but how about protecting VNC itself from password cracking tools, etc?

EDIT: figured it out - need the viewer program, web-based version doesnt support that feature

can someone explain how the file sharing feature works? i'm having trouble getting it to work? I'd like to send a file from the server pc running ultravnc to the pc i'm accessing it from...is this only done via the viewer program, or can it be done through the browser socket viewer? (i.e. http://x.x.x.x:5800 ?
