Ultrabook with CorelDraw X5

My wife wants an Ultrabook for her next laptop. She uses programs like CorelDraw X5 and Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop for her home-based business. Will a new Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge (core i7) and 4GB of RAM be enough to smoothly run these programs? Not sure how the processors in the new Ultrabooks compare with their desktop counterparts (obviously slow, just not sure how much). Also, do the Ultrabooks have a different IB processor in them than a standard, non-thin/light laptop?

Lots of RAM and a very good display.
The new ASUS Zenbook Prime should fit the bill...

mattspeer01 - Let me help you out. All your concerns about these new fangled ultrabooks and their "slow" processors and "lack of optical drives" ... your wife will be fine.

The Asus Zenbook Prime is exactly what I have been looking at, although its 4 GB of RAM seems a bit low.

Heres the thing though...you said home based business. Does that mean she will process mostly at home? Unless she absolutely needs to do processing on the go on a regular basis you should really reconsider a desktop system. It can be done in a a small form factor, with a better screen, with FAR more horsepower, and at lower price than a comparable laptop.

If she must have a mobile platform and will use it away from home MOST of the time an ultrabook may be great because of the small size/weight and decent performance. If it will only occasionally be used mobile and more often used at home on a desk you should probably consider a little bit 'bigger' unit...or rather a laptop with a full power CPU (quad core) and more ram as it will be a more suitable desktop replacement.

If she already has a desktop machine and the notebook is in addition to that then disregard my opening statements.

I agree a desktop would be better, but she often moves around the house as she works. She currently has a 17" Dell Inspiron 1720 that weighs nearly 8 lbs, so she really wants something easier to tote around the house with here. A lighter laptop that isn't an Ultrabook, such as the Dell XPS 15Z might also be good, but those have yet to be updated this year.

I use CorelDraw X5 quite often and while the processor speed won't be a problem only having 4GB of RAM could be. Especially if you are working with large bitmaps and/or are multitasking.

Isn't the memory of ASUS Zenbook Prime upgradeable to a higher RAM? it's a shame if not, the zenbook looks like a really nice high-end ultrabook

Processing power shouldn't be a problem but I'd watch out for the RAM. She'll probably also want a faster drive.
