With onboard video, a 300W PSU could run conroe. If your running a high powered video card or raid setup then it takes more power.

I'm not so worried about the wattage, so much as physical connections/specifications/etc and cpu/mobo requirements in the new line (i.e. .ike the atx specs/versions and whatever else they like to change all the time to make us buy new crap)

i'm running a 500w right now (forget brand) with 2 opticals/3 drives and a 2.4@3.2/6800gt@u/5 fans/2 light sticks with no problems (i don't plan on having the eye candy in the conroe system, so figure the power should still be fine at 500W, even though i'll be using a 7900 series gpu instead.

so basically this thing should be fine for the conroe cpu/mobo?

The X-Finity has the 8 pin EPS, 2 PCI-E and 24 pin power. And the 4 pin aux power connector. I haven't heard of any other connectors it's missing, anyways.
 
Free shipping at Radio Shack with a penny filler to hit $50, and a smaller rebate. That looks like the way to go.

I like the 500W power supply much better than the older Ultra models. Dual rails, flexible cabling, lots of connectors, and a quiet 120mm fan. Picked up one a month ago on a previous $10 AR deal.

 
Can anyone tell me whether there are any tricks to printing out those onrebate.com forms. I emailed them and of course got no reply, which is a bad sign to start with. Are they pdf forms emailed as an attachment do they require activeX, where they really take control of computer and print it for you?
 
Following their directions carefully mine was approved fairly quick after it was received. I've heard of some people having hassles but there shouldnt be any issues if you make copies of everything and make sure you send in everything thats asked for.

As far as actually getting the rebate, mine was approved on 6/29 and am waiting out the 6-8 week timeframe so I cant really comment on how reliable receiving it will be yet. There was an option for rush payment (for a fee) but I didnt test it out, may be worth it though if you dont like to wait.

But could you please explain how you got the rebate form printed out. Was it a pdf attachment to an email? Was it an ordinary web page? Or do they have some sort of special program that you have to run on your computer that prints it out for you?

You can't test it out to see if it works until you've bought something. You've already done it. Come on, tell us how it works!

 
It's good that you can get this for cheap...as this way you'll have more money to spend to replace your motherboard when the power supply kills your system.

Ultra PSUs are ******. Buyer beware. I made the mistake once...never again.

Is that older Ultra models???? Anything on these new ones??
 
people are very uninformed. the old ultras (x-connect) probably 10% failed
new ultras (x-finity, v-series, x2-connect) more like 1-3% fail

I just installed my x-finity and so far it's great, between 5-10dB quieter than my x-connect was

But still, the X-Finity is better then the X2, and the X2 is better then the V-Series. Either way, Ultra PSUs are some of the only PSUs that you can get for $10 and they are still above average.

which model was that? take some time to research before you post.. read the reviews on the X-Finity and then come back to trash it..

 
Actually, the X-Finity PSU's are very solid. I'm running SLI, 3 hard drives, 2 optical drives, an overclocked opteron, memory and 4 120mm fans and I have more than enough power to spare. I'm very happy with it.

If I recall you have to go to their website, and register an account, then you fill out an online submission, then it lets you print out a the forms (if you missed printing it out after you already done an online submission you can log in your acct anytime and print it out).

Some advice, you have to use their mailing label that prints from one of the forms, and the UPC code has to be taped or stapled to the rebate form (not just dropped in the envelope). I printed out a copy of the Radioshack online invoice and included both it and the packing slip just to be safe for the required receipt part.

I have researched many Ultra PSU and the only ones I ever seen with a bad failure rate was the first gen x-connects which were made by a different manufacturer than the x-2 and x-finity models (ultra does not make their own).

The only issue that I have heard about these x-finitys is that some have fan/noise issues. Anyways I received mine in good shape and it runs silent so I have no regrets going with this model.
