Now it is possible it doesn't have the proper connections if it isn't an ATX standard psu. There aren't many out there that aren't, but you normally do need a 6 pin connector. I would physically check the PSU and make sure you have a 24 pin, a 6 pin, and a 4 pin as well as either a sata or IDE power connector. You may also want to check what kind of hard drive you have and make sure it can be hooked up without an adapter, otherwise you'll have to pop for that too. As far as the wattage on the power supply is concerned it will be enough watts.

Those PSUs are just too cheap to have any chance of being reasonable quality. Your current PSU actually looks to be a little crap as well. Can you elaborate as to why you cannot simply save up some more money? Do Euros self-destruct after a certain time or something?

I'm kind of curious as well. You could really use some other upgrades as well, and you are already beyond your budget...

It is not about money, it is about what you get and about making a choice. Why do ppl buy an ATI 5750 for €110 when they can get a 5770 for €130? Its just €20 more. Why get 2gb of RAM when you can get 4gb for €20 more? This is a non stop thing. For work (lisrel, office, spss) my current pc is more than enough, so I'm spending money JUST TO GAME, and I dont like gaming that much to spend more.

Choices are hard to make when u are limited in resources 😉

It's not enough. Get a new PSU as well. You are actually sacrificing build quality and stability for this upgrade. If you need your computer to work for work as well, you realize the importance of a stable machine. Powering that machine with a crappy 400W PSU is not a good decision. If it was just for games, maybe, but now you're throwing reliability into the mix.

Overall a 250 euro budget is plenty reasonable when you can't get any gaming consoles there for that much. you should also get 4GB RAM. Put an extra few dollars in to get the ASUS motherboard, the E6500, and a new PSU.

Basically you are not getting performance/euro. an extra 80 euro on your budget will get you 50% of your performance, and considering it's only an extra 30% it's not that big of a deal. There is a reason this thread has gone on this long. It's mostly people telling you you're being crazy. A new Processor and ram will speed up productivity apps as well. You don't realize it now, but they are sluggish. Get the better parts for a few more euro

E6500 - 72E
9800GT - 91E
ASUS P5KPL - 41E
2GB DDR2 800 - ~20E
PSU (don't buy a 20E PSU... they are likely to fry your system they are so cheap) - ~50E

Total - 274E

If you don't like it, fry your system with that 400W PSU that's inefficient, or get a crappy motherboard and let that either give out, or maybe even take out pieces of your system bit by bit. I don't like being lied to. You said you had a tight budget but said things throughout the thread like "I don't have more to spend" or "I can't afford to spend more". Now it comes out that you "don't want to spend that much", Either make upgrades to allow your system to run 3 - 4 - 5 years down the road or let your system burn in a year or two because of the crappy parts in it. That is the issue with your budget, RELIABILITY, not performance. If you need this computer for work, you NEED to spend this money, if not you can't play games. That is what it comes down to. You've heard the consequences of your actions. You get what you pay for sometimes. We trusted you to tell us the truth and we've been trying to help you, but you've been hiding things from us, IMPORTANT details. If you decide to make crappy upgrades to your system and it won't turn on, or it starts smoking it's not our fault you'll have to spend another 300E to fix it.

Grrr... what part of I dont have more to spend is not understood?!?! I don't have, I can't afford and I don't want to spend more!
This is not about my life or money or what I can or cannot pay. If I cant spend more than €170 I cant.

This is about, with the components I wrote above and their prices, if it was possible\worthy to get a faster system FOR GAMING than the one I already had, that was all.

I was expecting you guys to say:
Buy the E6500 and decent mainboard and RAM and forget the gfx cause in games it will obliterate your Pentium D.
Or, think about an i3 and a decent board, keep ur RAM cause your games will get much, much faster.
(...)
Or, forget about it, because this or that, whatever, if I cant, I cant.

As simples as that!

Simply put you can save more in that case. It is called patience. Otherwise if you are completely opposed to having a working computer you can make the upgrades you choose. A lot of what you "thought we'd say" are ideas full of compatibility issues, so good luck.

What I'm saying is if your PSU doesn't have proper connections and you are planning on a 20E one to replace it you'll run into issues. What we have been trying to get across (at least most everyone) is that we can't do anything reasonable with your budget. So you either risk MANY compatibility and reliability issues choosing cheap hardware off the shelf, or you buy what we recommend and MAYBE squeeze by. We can't take responsibility for our limited options in your case, because most of the brands and hardware you listed are either ancient or crappy quality, or BOTH.

Compatibility issue 1

The crappy motherboards you listed have a really crappy onboard graphics. So you couldn't play any games released after 2000 on "Medium-High" like you want.

i3s and a 1156 motherboard you would require would be over 200E on their own, and DDR2 sticks aren't compatible with DDR3 slots, no matter how hard you push...

I understand that you wanted to get "Medium-High" graphics on unidentified games. Are these future games? current games? There is NOT A CHANCE you'll get good framerates at medium/ high on a lot of current games even when you spend 250E. It comes down to this and ONLY THIS.

DO YOU WANT YOUR COMPUTER TO WORK?

If that answer is yes then spend the few extra euro to get the better quality brands and the parts you need, if you are unwilling forget about it. That's how simple this really is. Keep your old office computer, because you need that to work to make money.

Plus, here's another thing, if you don't have a windows license you'll have to pay the 100E for a new one, plus then you'll have to buy all new software... I'm assuming what you have now is a name brand Dell or HP with a windows license assigned to the motherboard. If that is the case I won't endorse illegal activity in downloading it.

You were far too impatient going into this. I see this every day. People get over excited and think we are willing to do all their research and all the work for them. They come to us with ridiculous budgets thinking that they know what they are talking about. I've now put over 3 hours into researching and typing advice for YOU. You are not listening to anyones advice, so we have to keep trying to beat into you that you need all this stuff in the nicest way possible. Come back when you do some research for yourself. Google is your friend. Type in the parts into the little search bar and you'll find answers. You'll see that your PSU isn't going to work, you'll see that you're expecting too much of your money, you'll see how much work it is to help you, and everyone else who posts on this site. I'm not going to take the blame for the limited options you're giving us, and I am sure that the guy at the store will let you buy all the parts upfront before he tells you you need 7 more little things which will bring your budget well over what I'm even asking you to put into it. I'm sure you won't have a working computer in a year also, and you'll come back here and ask us again to take on your problems.

I'm trying to stop that. I am trying to tell you you don't have enough money to get a reliable machine out the other end, and if "random store guy" tells you it is he is talking about the absolute BEST scenario. If everything ends up being as incompatible as I'm guessing it will be you'll also be getting a new hard drive (~50E) or an adapter (~5E) and a new PSU (If you have any brains in your head you'll know it's dangerous to get a 20E PSU, like burn down your house dangerous), he'll also stick you for new RAM if you get the Foxconn. Hell, while you're at it, how bout a new Case?

In the end, it was as simple as that!!!!!

I know what to do with more money as there are plenty of guides that tells you ''the best gfx\cpu\etc for the money''.

I just dont work in a store and I dont build computers all year to have the kind of knowledge to say: Ok, I've built up 100 pcs with that PSU and it wont work. With that motherboard you computer will burn, etc.

If it wont work, it wont work, thread ended. My current computer will still run office\lisrel\spss tomorrow (our univ provide licenced software for students so I dont have issues with that).
What if I cant game?! I will live with that, lol... this was an opportunity, it was unworthy, so, life goes on, without newer games, thats all 🙂

I appreciate alls contribution to the thread!

That is the most responsible decision I think. I would obviously never recommend "The Best" because it's normally too much money to be near reasonable, but to find the best bargains. Basically you just don't want to buy stale bread ya know? You want bread that's fresh and won't be stale for a while. I'm trying to come up with an analogy for the power supply but I can't think of anything that could burn your house down brand new like a crappy psu. I'm sorry if I got a little irritable, but I really just was looking out for you. It would not be cool if a PSU I told you to buy/ keep burnt your place down or destroyed your computer... I mean no one feels good in that situation.

Well, no problem, I understand the situation... if you're posting it is because you're trying to help.
Its just I cant spend more and I cant afford myself to buy things now and because of a weak PSU blow em up! I cant get driven in salesman blabing and start buying things one after others!

Have to wait better days 🙂

A computer that I built someone, their 350W PSU included with their case burned out and blew up. Luckily, it didn't burn anything else down, nor did it destroy the rest of the computer, but it was a really bad user experience. I replaced the PSU with a better name-brand one even though it was out of warranty.

Then again, it may not have been the poor PSU's fault. She has a problem with her carpet and static electricity. When I walked across the room to pick up the side panel to her case after replacing the PSU, when I touched the side panel to the rest of the chassis, I felt and heard a zap, and the computer turned off.

I carefully turned off the PSU, then turned it back on again, then turned the computer back on. Luckily it booted. That's when she told me that it happens frequently. She tried to tell me that it doesn't hurt computers, but I vehemently disagreed.

What I don't get, is why the static wasn't grounded. I think that there is something wrong with the ground connection in her apt, and the static is grounding out through some of the circuitry in the PSU, shutting it down. Shouldn't static discharge on the chassis be discharged through the ground wire, since the chassis is connected to Earth ground, supposedly?

I dont understand that much about PSUs to help you :\

1.By the way, is 1Life or Halfmmann decent PSU brands?
2.Is there any way to clean your PSU, I can only clean the fans but there is dust inside the PSU I cant clean!

1. I've never heard of either of those brands here in the states.
2.A vacuum may get some of it, otherwise a screwdriver should get you inside, but it is important you ground yourself.

Okay, sorry to be back again but got news. After some hard negotiations with the salesman we tested my PSU. My current system is running 384Watt on my 400Watt PSU. Swapping to a C2D will save 100Watts or more so according to him I wont be closer to PSU limit with a better gfx if I swap my CPU. Yes I know, my PSU is still crap but whatever.

So, now I just have to choose between:

1) ASUS P5KPL-AM SE + Intel E5500 FSB800mhz + SAPPHIRE 5750 1Gb GDDR5
2) ASUS P5KPL-AM SE + Intel E6500 FSB1066mhz + POWER COLOR 5770 512mb DDR5

My pick is just FRAMES Based! Main differences are CPU, dunno what FSB does in gaming. Also 5770 is faster than the 5750 yet I dunno if I'll need that 1Gb of RAM or no.

Plz no more PSU criticism, lol... just tell me what will get me more frames!!! I play 1024*768, maybe 1280*1024.

2) ASUS P5KPL-AM SE + Intel E6500 FSB1066mhz + POWER COLOR 5770 512mb DDR5

Good idea getting him to test the PSU 🙂! Usually I do recommend 1GB VRAM. The 5750 isn't a horrible card in comparison to the 5770, and given games seem hungry for more VRAM I'd go with the 5570. Any way you can get the 1GB card and option 2?

At those resolutions, option 2. Faster CPU/GPU core speeds win at low res (under 512MB). Although E5500 (option 1) is probably better for an overclocker 🙂

I can get the 5770 1Gb... it is not that more expensive, the 512Mb version cost €120 and 1Gb version €130... the problem is I'm at my limit :\

I wont overclock and I cant get above 1280*1024 cause my screen doesnt allow. That is why I'm asking if I'll need that 1Gb... the 5750 is slower but also consumes a little less.

In the end, if I switch, my computer will consume much less than now, it seems this Pentium D is not only slow but also drains a lot of energy!

Crap, options are mistaken, now here are the correct!

1) ASUS P5KPL-AM SE + Intel E5500 FSB800mhz + Power Color 5770 512mb DDR5
2) ASUS P5KPL-AM SE + Intel E6500 FSB1066mhz + Sapphire 5750 1Gb DDR5

Take the first option. Any Core 2 will be much faster than what you have now and at 1280x1024, the 512MB of VRAM won't be an issue.

PS. You sure do have a weird method of financial planning. Maybe this is why Americans are so rich?
jk

I have my new machine working, E5500 + ATI 5770, now here are the changes:

SF IV - previously (800*600 low detail) > 1280*1024 (high detail)
F1 2010 - previously (640*480 medium detail) > 1280*1024 (4XAA high detail)
SWTFU - previously (unplayable at any res) > 1280*1024 (high detail)

I didnt test more games and I cant use higher resolutions. Atm is worthing the money, specially because of SWTFU, before I couldnt get more than 6fraps!!!!

Enjoy gaming on your new machine! It looks like you got the performance boost you were looking for. 🙂
