Ok I misunderstood you. I personally think modular power supplies are a dumb idea so it doesnt mean a thing to me. It sounded like you were portraying anyone who felt their patent was flimsy as ignorant. Yes a lot of people look at it and immediately crack jokes, but other's look at it, read the patent, realize that the only way they ever got this patent was by throwing so much bullshit and technical jibberish into it the patent office just stamped it rather than admit they had no clue what Ultra was talking about, and the second another manufacturer faces them in court and disseminates the patent it'll get laughed at.

Ah.. that tells me a lot. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with your standpoint. That's another discussion. But it does explain your reaction to a bit. You couldn't care about the results one way or another. ;)

Well, I think the patent was reviewed rather well because it seems to have been bounced a couple times before they issued the patent. But I got into a discussion with someone over at overclockers.com that seems to have some decent legal background or some pretty good insight on this case and it sounds like the defendants have a pretty good fight... which is good! It's still not as simple as a lot of us armchair patent lawyers would like to think... but it does look like this might get thrown out. woo hoo!

I believe that as computer enthusiasts this is something we should take seriously because it could ultimately mean higher prices for modular power supplies OR nobody making modular power supplies (at least as we know of them today). Neither bodes well for us.
