720RPM. The less air you move, the less snoise you make. If you really want "silent" fans, I have a couple of dead ones I can pull out of the trash for you :)

Jameco.com has a nice fan that is 54CFM and it only 25dB. Got 2 of them at 7 bucks a piece to cool my amp and electronics.

just put one on an xp-120 a couple days ago, im probably not the best judge of dba but i cant hear it over the arctic silencer on the 9800xt which is pretty quiet, all in all with the case closed the loudest thing is the raptor hard drive. Only bad thing ive noticed about the silent wheel is that while it is compatible with 120mm screw holes, it doesnt fit in most openings made for square 120mm fans, and i had to use zip ties to hold it on the xp-120 which had fan clips for 120mm fans.

As mentioned, most manufacturer specs are not "accurate" or at least, not accurately comparable with other manufacturer's specs.as there are no standards for detailing them.

The only way to be accurate is to do direct comparisons between products in a lab-like environment - or at the least, using the same consistently quiet environment. Websites like silentpcreview.com are great sources for this type of analysis, but even then, results won't be perfect as the lab hardware or the room sometimes changes over the years.

They do however commonly offer sound recordings in reviews of tested devices and these mp3's really do give justice to the perceived noise level. If anything, using a single device's sound level as a reference for silent operation is good enough to judge how loud something is. For instance, panaflo's low-speed 80mm and nexus' 120mm are commonly used as standards throughout the articles.

fan reviews
SPCR's lab
Recommended Fans (and why!)

IMHO - Nexus makes the best 120mm bar none for silent operation. Its sound is more like whoosh instead of whirrr, and at 5-7v, its still offers plenty of pushed air as long as the system has good air circulation.

I second the nexus, which I use silently on a scythe ninja cooling a 2.6ghz amd64 at 30.5C on load. I've always paid 15.99 for the nexus fans and is worth the extra to me since i like the characteristics of the fan. Anyone find them cheaper? The coolermaster fan listed by the op is 9.99 at newegg.

Wow thanks, I'm getting an xp120 for my sons computer and was thinking about this for him. Maybe I'll swap him my nexus case fan and pick one up anyway.

I'm more interested in seeing this anechoic chamber with the <10dB noise floor they used to measure this 13 dBA number. 13 dBA is like a gnat farting.

I don't doubt this fan is quiet, but if the manufacturer exaggerates noise specs, then why should we trust any of their other specs (CFM, MTBF, current draw, etc)?.

Any computer fan spinning at less than 1000 rpm is going to nearly inaudible.

Nexus fans are cherry picked Yate Loon's. An easy way to get a cheap bunch of good fans is to buy in bulk. I use the YL D12SM-12's (medium, not the low speed like the Nexus) since I can get blue LED versions of the SM-12, but if you want to find a cheap Nexus, look for Yate Loon D12SL-12's. They're the same fan. If you buy in bulk, you're pretty much guaranteed to get a few of good quality.

I believe Nexus adds a resistor to decrease speed slightly, but for the most part you'll find that they're very similar in noise characteristics.

I bought 10 D12SM-12 LED's for around $25 from TekGems.

>I wonder when someone will try to cool their PC in a tank of motor oil.

I might snip off the leads to the whiney power supply fan and duct tape one of these on the outside.
Does that qualify?

Well all be...though you know, Id still go for motor oil. Looks better doesnt smell as funny and isnt nearly as corrosive (Ever heard of fatty acid?) And you know you can get motor oil to below freezing temps...if you could find a way to cool and recirculate it...like some sort of freak water cooling gone bad.

What? Tape one of what on the outside of what? And does it qualify for what?

I bought one of the Thermaltake Silent Wheel @ SVC. and its really nice, quiet and smooth but.....

Its really big at 130mm and although the mounting holes lined up..the diameter of the fan would not fit in my htpc case designed for a 120mm.

If mounting on a flat surface...you might get away with it...I had to sell it.
