To start..

Black Coolermaster Wavemaster
Super Flower PSU 550w
AMD 3200+
ASUS K8V
1 Gig PC 3200 OCZ
nVIDIA 6800GT
200 Gig Seagate
Nec 8x Dual layer dvd drive

Suggestions on something that is on the very quiet side AND power the system? :)

Antec makes a passively cooled PSU. not a lot of wattage though, and kinda expensive, but it's absolutely silent.

its not quiet? are you friggin nuts? its 140mm fan spinning at a max of 2200RPM, and its adjustable so you can make it run slower. it puts out a max of 28dB, 24 on low speeds. if you want a quieter PSU buy earplugs.

the antec phantom is silent, I am planning to get one for my dothan desktop, might not be powerful enough for a full blown p4/a64 system though with a power hungry video card

weren't there overheating issues with most all of these fanless PSUs, or have they fixed these issues and moved on?

Heh I modded my PcPower&Cooling 425 Deluxe and replaced the stock Nidec (louda_s) fan with a SilenX 80mm 14dba fan and it is absolutely silent :) That is pure quality with absurd silence!

The Antec Phantom is about as quiet as it gets, but overheating can be a problem if your case airflow isn't good.

Unless your system is going to be totally fanless, I don't see a big advantage to going for a passively-cooled PSU.

Seasonic and Enermax are not only quiet PSUs, they're strong in every other aspect as well, output, efficiency.

You can always do a fan mod on any PSU, but of course that'll void the warranty.

Unfortunately a fan mod on ANY PSU is not so simple , but with PCPowr&Cooling its rather simple. They are one of the few PSU's that have a 2 pin connector for the fan rather than the usual soddered fan connections found on most PSU's . Just need the 3 pin to 2 pin connectors which are sold here> http://www.buyextras.com/22femaco3cof1.html

Best site on the net for everything to do with computing silence. My recommendation is Seasonic. A friend of mine has a 400w tornado and I can't even hear the damn thing. And they run at around 80% efficency too.

I dont care what they "say" it is.

I have it running beside a few feet to my right, on low. If I stop my HS Fan and exhaust fan it's quite simple to tell where the noise is coming from, the psu. If its under 32~ I'd be suprised.

The Antec Phantom is rated at 80-85% efficiency. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me, and I bet it could run without a fan with those levels. I think it has a pretty good +12V rail as well.

go to silentpcreview.com they have new reviews on the seasonics, which run on 120s. i think that'd be a good choice. oh yeah - i have the cooler master centurion [same type of case] if you manage to switch out all of your 80s for some panaflos, that might help too. b/c my four coolermasters make a heck of a lot of noise.

Yeah I already took out the default fans, put a stealth on the HS [Definatly defective, but shipping would be more than buying a new one, it moves enough air for now]

3 Artic cooling fans that were supposed to run at 14~ db [They dont spin on low or medium, so instead they run at ~28db

The seasonic SS is looking pretty good.

I would probably:
Seasonic Super Tornado 400
If you have 80mm Case fans, Panaflo L1A @ 5-7V
If you have 120mm Case fans, Globe 120mm @ 7V or Nexus 120mm @ 9V
If you have 92mm fans, Panaflo L1A @ 7V or Panaflo M1BX @ 5-7V
Arctic Silencer NV5 for your graphics card w/ Zalman fanmate to lower fan RPM

My point is, that upon obtaining a very quiet psu, you get to be annoyed by your system fans and gpu fans that seem quiet now, but really are just slightly quieter than your loud psu.

Panaflo Hydrowave's are great but even if the case is designed for 80mm, 92mm are much more efficient (higher flow for same noise, same flow for less noise or anywhere inbetwixt) and can be used without any modification by simply mounting with double-sided foam tape which is a Good Thing regardless because of the mechanical isolation. It can also be used for power supplies. Fanmates are an E-Z way to set voltage anywhere from 5-11V, if I recall. SpeedFan dynamic control is great too but is limited to those mainboard power headers that are already adjustable.

Yes, only if you can hear it above your Harddrives. In the end, the Harddrive will be the chief noise maker. There is little you can do when you get to this level except making sound absorbing HDD enclosures which can be a pain and make your HDD too hot.

So, in other words, leave the zalman fanmates to the very end of your quieting project.
