Ultra/Extreme Commuters

Ok, current situation: Work and live in NYC. Finally decided to buy a house. Unfortunately budget is only in the 200k range. As many NYers know, that couldn't buy a carboard shack in the city.

Therefore, thinking of moving to rural Pennsylvania, Pocono mountains, etc. and commute into NYC everyday. Approx 2 hours with moderate traffic. Houses there are much cheaper, lower crime rates, better scenery, etc. Plus I have no commute expenses other than tolls, with free cars and gas.

Anyone other Ultra commuters around the NY area that do the same thing? Any extreme commuters in general that undertake such journeys to get to work? Any impact on family/social life?

4 hours of your time will go to commute everyday, do you think it is worth it? along with tolls, you are looking at about around $15 to get in the city and $10 to get back. maybe doable, if you can get another sucker(carpool) to do this with you.

how about long island area where you can take the train?

Actually Jersey was also an option, east of the Philly area...willingboro, etc. beautiful houses only about 120-150k. Very affordable, also 1.5 hr commute. I'm looking there also.

I spend around 3 hours per day commuting. It sucks in ways that you can't imagine. Not only is travelling 130 miles per day torture on gas prices, but I need an oil change once a month.

Think about it. 4 hours per day. Gone. 20 hours per week. Gone. 80 hours per month.

Gone.

I used to have a 10-15 minute commute from the near west side to downtown, all freeway. I hated it sometimes.

Now I have a 30-45 miute commute from the suburbs, all surface streets. I hate it every single day, morning and evening.

Don't do it.

You won't have any time to enjoy your new house and you will be spending tons in gas, somehow the numbers just don't add up.

i spend anywhere from 30 minutes upwards to 90 minutes commuting to work each way, and it puts me in a bad place. i can't imagine what 120 minutes each way would do to me...

edit: i'm sure many of you know of the 405, 10, and 110 freeways...

Guarantee you you won't like it. Even in some Ferrari you it'd get boring after a week. If it was via train or if someone was driving you it might be doable since you can do other stuff than concentrate on the road when you're in the car...

calculate how much money you'd be making if you were working those 4 hours. then just see how much $ of your time is being wasted on commuting. it's probably a lot more than you think.

if you do need to live outside of the city. try and live near commuter rails. public transportation is far more enjoyable than being stuck in traffic (read the newspaper or whatever on your way to work). it's also a lot safer and better for the environment.

i'm from mercer county, nj and the train ride into NYC is about an hour.

it's definitely worth it to own a smaller house which has a much more convenient location, than to have a bigger house far out of your way.

My friend goes to UCLA but lives at home in south Orange Country. Probably 1.5-2 hours each way every day. He wakes up at 4AM every day. He's insane, doesn't like it at all, is hurrying to get done with college. It's not worth it unless you are one of those types that doesn't need a lot of sleep and at the same time loves driving.

Did you ever think of what happens when it snows? A commute takes 3 times the normal time.
Not good.

I commute 40 minutes each way driving hard... I am seriously considering moving or finding a different job becuase of it.
