Ultra wouldn't be my first choice unless I got a very good deal... too many better brands/models to choose from at the same price point.

Like what? Just curious. If I was looking for a quiet modular PSU, what choices do I have that actually compare to the X3 in price/performance? What about cheaper alternatives to the X-Pro that still have the high efficiency, fully sleeved cables, etc?

I got an Ultra X-Connect (first gen) 500watt power supply after a mail-in-rebate from outpost.com about two years ago. It ran great for about a year and a half until one day my computer died and it would not boot. I tried a couple times - but the computer would only turn on for about half a second and then turn off. I used a power supply tester on it and it indicated that the power supply was dead. So.. I decided I would RMA it. I found out I needed the receipt. Getting the receipt was more of a pain in the ass than it should be.!

that is true, i had one 2 years ago with same experience.
iam currently using the ultra v series 500wat (free after rebate from fry's exactly 1 year ago) . now it starting to have strange noise inside as if the wire is being burned slowly.
thats why iam here today in this forum for some advice for a new psu before it crap out anytime soon.

Ultra's mid/high level PSU's are really good, and the have bar none the best looking cables. I was sad when my X-Connect died. I had no proof I bought it so I couldn't get the replacement. Currently looking at the 800 watt one, they might not be the best of the best but they far from suck. For me the modular cables push them over the top. I haven't seen another modular unit that even came close to having the same quality cables.
