I think it mostly depends on your needs. UltraVNC supports setting permissions based on Active Directory, which is a must-have for me.

Does anybody here know whether one of these reverted that ALT key hack?

From certain revisions on there is a special emulation for the Alt key. I forgot what problem there were trying to solve but in effect that listen directly tot he keyboard to figure whether the ALT key is pressed.

That breaks some of my applications which send XEvents with modifiers status set.

I never heard of UltraVNC, did they maybe go back to a plain keystroke conversion scheme?

Ultr@VNC is faster and have File transfer, and Chat too.

UltraVNC is better, imho, plus it can use tightvnc's compression.
