Possibility of promotion with long hair: 0
Possibility of promotion with short hair: >0

Got told by my boss that I was turned down for a management track because my appearance(long hair) was seen as not professional and they couldn't put me in front of a big client. Hair is down a few inches past shoulder, and has been for about 10 years now. With hair cut there is no guarantee I will be put into the program

First instinct: I was thinking about cutting it anyway, and for the shot at a significant raise I have no problem doing it.

Now: Feeling like a tool for planning to cut it. Want to tell them to F' themselves. When I was thinking about cutting it for the hell of it it was ok, but doing it when I am told to jump is lame.

Also, I have a daughter and what I want doesn't matter. I need to accumulate as much wealth as possible to make her life easier, so long as it doesn't take me away from my first job as her father.

Appt with hair lady is at noon.

That's some serious hairism. I'd file a complaint with HR about it, and recommend your supervisors attend diversity training.

Yeah, gotta hand it to corporate America for basing skill sets and aptitude on appearances.

What is a hair lady? I think I might have seen one in the circus once.

Why do guys have long hair anyways....just looks retarded on them 99% of the time.

Those are not the comments I get. At work it is usually pulled back into a ponytail. I decided to wear it down on what will likely be its last day of existence and have gotten several compliments on it.

Just cut your fucking hair.

And, I would have been passive agressive about it as well. I would schedule quarterly "advice on professionalism" meetings with your boss and management. Site and bring up examples about how to deal with things that THEY do themselves - like say "fuck" during meetings, mistreat employees, not include some content on personal appearance, etc.

I made up the 1st two examples, but, you get the idea.

It's called professionalism. We had a guy at my last place who was in sales come in with a mohawk one day. Lasted all of an hour before the CEO saw him and "reccomended" he cut his hair.

At what point do you draw the line, first its hair, then its clothes, then its language.

If you want to work in a white collar job, dress and act the part. Otherwise move on to the blue collar jobs. Does it suck that that is the way it is? Yeah, but that is the way it is 95% of the time.

And yes, I know there are exceptions in everything, but what I said is true in most cases.

high percentage of communication is non-verbal (posture, attitude, facial expressions, tone, etc), plus you normally have an initial 20 seconds to make a first favorable impression on a new contact. For best communication, your non-verbal patterns should be similiar to the client or customer; if they dress in jeans, flannels and have long hair, your attire should be similiar. If they dress in suits, wingtips and have a calculator in their pocket.........

if you own the company...do as you please. If you are working for someone, then it's best to follow their style/requirement of appearances.

Just cut it, you cant expect to be put in front of customers while having long hair. I personally dont care, but there are some that do, and as long as they exist, companies will be hesitant to put someone in front of the customer lest they risk losing a sale due to your looks. Sucks but its a fact of life.

I know that feel OP. I have people hating on my long hair all of the time. They're just jealous of how sexy and soft it is

I did wear a viking helmet from the warrior dash to work last week, and rode up on the elevator with the VP who may have the problem. His boss is in town for today and tomorrow, so at least my buzzcut will get seen.

Cut your hair and find another job. They should have told you to cut your hair and use some time to evaluate, THEN promote you, rather than using it as an excuse afterwards for not doing so. They either are BS'ing you or are terrible at communicating what they want. Either way, success is tenuous there.

I had it buzzed for a long time before deciding to grow it out, and I turned out to have magical soft curly Fabio hair that women fawn over and covet.

I have a question, Turin, do you have a family that you are responsible for? Do you have a wife and children that depend on you to provide for them?

If so, cut your hair.

If you are only responsible for yourself, and you are comfortable in your life, leave your hair long.

While I have no problem with someone having long hair, I can see why a boss would be against it. Especially if you interact with customers. It's one thing for the service tech at Best Buy to have long hair, but for someone who will potentially sit across from a "big client" and potentially lose a sale because the customer prefers someone with a bit more "professionalism"... yeah, you gotta cut your hair.

Now, if your next big client was the owners of some bike shop... probably not a big deal, but I assume your clients are the suit and tie type.
