Guys,

I am a heavy workstation user games/video/networking/torrent/music/vmware etc and a laptop working person.

I have over time developed a kind of first (once you have finished installing OS all the apps that you install) installed software list. What is yours?

WinRar
VLC Player
Dameon Tools
Regclean
BootVis
Paint Shop Pro
Net Stumbler
iTunes (not really by choice!)
MS Power Toys
Acrobat Reader
Quake 2 (on all my laptops)
DosBox
Steganous Security Suite
Skype
MSN Messenger
Opera
FlashFXP
Macromedia MX
Office Pro 2003
Nero burn
Adaware
Norton AntiVirus

Well thats the bulk of what I use...

wmii
screen
firefox
Used to include irssi, but I haven't IRCed in a long time...
mutt
thunderbird
mpd
ossec

Most everything else comes by default...

This gets posted once a month in the Software forum. Please do a search. And look, wow, someone just posted the exact same question over there! (do you really need to discuss this twice?)

You should try 7-zip instead of WinRAR. 7-zip will do rar files and more, plus it's free so you don't have to be a pirate.

BootVis does nothing on Windows XP, as the BootVis functionality is already included in XP.

Instead of Acrobat Reader, you might try Foxit Reader. It's WAY WAY faster, and actually seems to be LESS buggy than Acrobat Reader.

Other than that, I love VLC Player, although I also install k-lite mega codec pack.

drop NAV, use AVG+Firewall edition instead.

I wouldn't touch AVG with a 10-foot stick. They've had too many problems with virus detection for me to trust my systems to it. Stick with Symantec or Trend Micro.

screen
irssi
vim
mutt
bittornado
gkrellm
galeon
gaim
mplayer

That's the stuff I use on a daily basis, but I have a lot of other stuff installed too, ~1400 packages on this machine it seems.
