Ultimate SLI PSU roundup

Not a very good review. I find it odd that the Silverstone wasnt given top choice.. He had no equipment hooked up to measure ripple or anything else.. Ive got the Silverstone 650 and it replaces my PPC&C 510 SLI.

What Venomous said. I've come to expect very little of PC hardware sites when it comes to PSU reviews, but really.

Thanks for the link, though. Neat idea, at least.

Based on their data, I think it is very easy to see how the Silverstone was not given top choice. However, I do agree that their review was very limited in scope.

It's better then the PC P&C? I had this lined up for my new rig.... is the Silverstone better? Better as in stableness, noisy, etc?

See. Seasonic rapes!!! PC Power is really nice though, I still love that PSU also.

And we still have those Fortron lovers touting their Bluestorms.... *sigh*

sigh

Fortron wasnt part of the roundup.

as to Fortron, they are the top makers of power supplies. most reliable and most trusted.

that is why a Dell with a 250W Fortron/Sparkle can handle a 6800GT and thus a 7800GTX.

case closed

by the way, that is a nice Seasonic power supply. but if I had the cash, I'd buy a power pc and cooling, hehe

PC&C is definitely very nice, but please tell me WHY Fortron is BETTER than say some manufacturer like Antec or Enermax. Their fan ramps up too fast and their voltage regulation is not top notch when compared to the other 2 brands.

Because Fortron/Sparkel makes and designs their own psus. You obviously have not been following their products closely.

Fortron tests and rates their power supplies at higher temperatures than other makers, and thus, their ratings are more accurate than others. that is also the reason why they mark their power supplies conservatively

you are speaking from ignorance.

i've said it before and i'll say it again,

PCP&C, Fortron/Sparkle, Seasonic are the top notch power supply makers.

Antec, Enermax, OCZ are decent, but not up to the quality and reliability as the ones mentioned above.

but, really, enough trolling already

stick to the topic

As I said before, Antecs get far better voltage regulation than Fortrons/Sparkle. Plus they're quieter. What more do you want then. They have excellent 12V rails too and when voltage regulation is tight, its a clear sign of quality.

If Fortron/Sparkle were really top of the line, they wouldn't be selling for like OCZ/Antec prices. There's a reason Seasonic, PCP&C sell at such high prices.

This is really good review. Looks like Silverstine have raw power, but is very loud. Shame that they didn't include OCZ Powerstream 600W, than that would be excellent review.

You may want to review the September issue of CPU magazine. During their stress test of PSUs, the Silverstone puked all over itself... it was ugly. Also, check this quote from the above linked review: ...my testbed had an unusual load balance that effected its +12V performance. As I mentioned previously in this review, the ST65ZF has minimum load requirements for the +5v rail to achieve specific loads on the +12V.

That is not a PSU, that is a POS.

The top dog was the PC P&C 850 SSI, followed by OCZ and Antec models (can't remember which ones). Since the Antecs die like flies, that rules them out in by book.

Nothing real surprising here. PC Power & Cooling stands at the very top.

Silverstone looks nice but looks don't power a rig.

OCZ is overpriced crap.

OCZ isn't overpriced crap. It beats out everything except PCP&C, and Seasonic (Of Course also Zippy). It is just flashy. HO, i have never heard of Antecs "dying like flies". THe Silverstone PSU's are very high quality, but i would not put them above Seasonic, and PCP&C. I would put them on par, give or take a little, with OCZ, Antec, and Enermax.

There is one thing i dont get though. Why are you guys buying 650Watt PSU's!??!?

Ill garauntee you that you barely touch 400Watt on a fully loaded SLI system. Unless you are running like 4gig of RAM and have about 10x HDD's i highly doubt you make it above 500.

Because a 600W PSU means 600W at a certain temp, and with certain rails loaded in certain ways, and is by no means a power output you will achieve.
It's also better to buy more than you need, because then you can upgrade.
Also, as said, many PSU makers over estimate what their PSU's can do.

The eXtreme PSU calculator does say I need over 300W for one of my systems though, but it's happy using a 300W PSU, so it all depends on what PSU you have really.

That CPU Magazine article isn't very well written. The author did not have an accurate information about +12V rail draw for his system and the Seasonic 600W also did poorly in his test (which is very unusual).
