http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vauxhall_Lotus_Carlton

this was vauxhalls effort at a 4 door family saloon, released in 1986. 4 years later lotus get their mits on it.

3.6litre twin turbo I6 engine (garret T25 turbos), 377bhp, 419fl-lbf torque, 6 speed tranny from the corvette at the time, rear drive, 4 doors and a boot. and still looked like a boring beater of a vauxhall

0-60 in 5.2
177mph top speed.

they only built 950 between 1990 and 1992

Not bad.

But I think the ultimate sleeper would be a Ford Taurus Wagon with a tweaked SHO engine and converted to RWD/AWD :p

Or maybe those Miata's with GM V8's in em?

The Buick T-Types were sleepers. The GNX was much more in your face. The T-types had the same underpinnings as the GNX w/ the standard Regal trim.

The ultimate sleeper would be a 1995 Buick Roadmaster wagon w/ Impala SS suspension parts and a Lingenfelter 383. Not even the cops would see you coming.

my vote for ultimate sleeper has to go to..........

TURBO MINIVANS!

Yeah, but I think we're limiting this to showroom stock cars?

Believe it or not - Chrysler actually *DID* produce some factory turbo minvans in the 80s!

Take the "STI" badge off and looks like a normal WRX. It just happens to have 300 ponies instead of 225(or whatever the standard WRX has).

Of course the original sleeper car, which inspired the beach song "Little old lady from Pasadena" was the 64 fury which came with a monster big block and 3x2 barrel carb, known as the six pack. I've got a buddy that has fully restored one, and it is sweet, from outward appearance it looks like a grannymobile. But fire it up and its a dead giveaway, sounds like the drag strip car that it is.

I just bought an 06 impala ss a couple of months ago, and this thing is quite the sleeper also. With the relatively bland styling, and overall lack of bling (except for a couple of small SS badges) it looks like any other 4 door sedan impala/camry/avalon/etc... on the road, but the beast that lies under the hood is amazing:) With 303hp of V8 goodness this thing performs almost on par with GT mustangs and the mopar hemi beasts (charger r/t, and 300C srt)

Ultimate sleeper would have to be any normal car with a sweet ass driver behind the wheel. ;)

Yeah I think "Fresh Prince of Belaire" ruined the name Calrton:)

Yes, I'm quite sure that's where the negative feelings from the name Carlton were spawned.
