On February 24, ALPHA will officially begin shipping their PAL8942 "Sunflower killer" copper heatsink for the P4 processor (socket 478).

The ALPHA PAL8942 is 10% larger than the PAL8045, and will use an 80mm fan. It has a rating of 0.23 deg C/W, compared to 0.28 deg C/W for the PAL8045, and 0.35 deg C/W for the AVC Sunflower. Dimensions (mm) are 78.5*90*42, compared to 80*80*45.5 for the PAL8045. Specifications available here.

kewl! been waitin for alpha to get off its butt!

theres a new thermaltake dragon 478, ...but its loud, looks difficult to clean, and the fan is unswapable 🙁

there a 2 versions on that link - 40db and 21db.

the alpha uses a typical 80mm fan that you can replace with anything you want too.

will the 21db version be much of a difference from the stock hsf? this thing already cools pretty well...anyone know the specs on the fan for the stock hsf?

Henhow,

I seem to recall that the stock Intel heatsink is 32dB...so the 21dB version of Alpha would be half as loud.

actually it would be ~1/16th as loud, the dB scale is logarithmic 🙂 + 3dBs ~= twice as loud

Cool, it's about time for Alpha to make a hsf for the P4. Now I might upgrade to a P4, the only performance hsf I can get where I live is the MCX478 and it's only one shop which has it and it's costly. As Alphas are cheaper than SwiftTech and easier to get here the P4 suddenly looks more appealing.

I want one of these badboys! Anyone have any idea who will be selling them, and/or have them in stock the soonest?

Just an update for everyone...

Coolerguys.com expects to receive stock of the Alpha PAL8942 next week!

It is 1/16th the INTENSITY, but it WILL NOT sound 1/16th as loud. The dB scale is how we hear it. If you double the sound intensity, we only hear 3 more dB, so the Alpha will sound more like 1/2 as loud
