goku,

if you want my experience, i currently own and maintain a dual xeon 2.8 system with 2 gb of RDram and a Compaq Smartarray 5300 SCSI Raid controller using 3 36.4 gb 10k SCSI HD's HT enabled. on paper looks like a killer system, for certain types of applications tho, this system crawls. in my opinion, the deep pipeline kills performance, particularly when you have many threads running.

where it really sux the most is when running terminal services. it can't seem to deal with a virtual user very well. my amd64 3200+ runs terminal services better than my duallie does.

So in your experience a AMD with its onboard memory controller and hypertransport bus will fair better? (I'm not disagreeing).

i don't have a system with hypertransport yet (currently being built) so i can't comment on it, tho if i were to speculate, i'd say yes, i have a hard time believing that a cutting edge amd64 system will not outperform my duallie xeon system.

goku,

Are those Nocoma's xeons, ppl are saying they won't work in pc-dl mobo , it has something to do w/ the vrm..

Also I doubt you'll be able to over clock Nocoma's to 250fsb, because most ppl are oc'ing 533 versions to 800fsb. Not starting w/ an 800fsb processor. check this link:

http://forums.2cpu.com/showthr...?s=&threadid=53127

"ASUS PC-DL rev1.05 1006 BIOS with 2x 3.06 SL6YR Xeons @ 3.74 watercooled (18x208@1.50V - 1.550VID 2.81VDIMM) or (12x250@1.50V 1.550VID 2.91VDIMM) - CineBench2003 362/813" Also get ready to use water cooling, look this guy is at 208fsb .....

You said opteron's were out of your budget, but what is your budget ??

Regards,
Jose

pfff, the OP is one uninformed person

go ahead and get the stupid dual Xeon, since it for your sister and you aren't too bright either. Only brainwashed people use Dual Xeons now. Again, your sister's computer is just for bragging purpose, so get her a dual Xeon and come back and cry about how crap your systmes perform, since you are neglecting our recommendations here.

yeah she does video encoding, what is she? Steven Spielsberg? Or she encodes video for LucasArt or any of those major animation companies? Even they don't use XEONS.

So what the budget ? Dual Opterons might work great, if they are in the budget.
