sometimes the heat really is a problem. You may not notice since you have an old SCSI-1 drive.
I had some Ultra 160 10,000 RPM SCSI drives that would crash the computer after a while and refuse to be recognized after a reboot. After cooling them down, they would be detected by the SCSI controller again. After putting them in the pcpowercooling bay coolers, I have had no such problems.
