Need some advice.

So I bought and played Dragon Age Origins when it came out all those years ago. Loved it like I loved all the good Bioware RPG's.
Fully meant to eventually get Awakenings and play through that story and such. Just ran out of time.

Well now it is all these years later and I have some time. But looking around it looks like it will cost more to buy the Expansion and the fucking DLC's (as much as I fucking hate the concept, stone prisoner was awesome and the descriptions for the others sound just as good) than it would be to just buy the GOTY or Ultimate collection.

But..... I have the original game and a couple of the DLC's already saved on here. Can I just load the parts I am missing? And if so what do I do with the left overs?
The whole situation makes me happy I didn't buy Arkham City on an impulse because it seems like the best thing to do is wait a year and get these collections of an eighth the price of the parts separate.

Update:
Of course I go to look on amazon and steam and DA:0 - UE is bumped up to 20-30 bucks. Fuck. More waiting for me.

Any suggestions for the interim while I wait for the price to drop?

Something I can get right now and is fairly cheap. Other than DA:O and Arkham Asylum I haven't played really any big titles in the last 3 years or so.

Thanks.

This is what I've been doing. I'm past the "OMG GOTTA PLAY IT NOW" mentality. Not to say that I never buy anything at release - I did for The Witcher 2 - but I have plenty of games to fill up my game playing time and have learned some patience. So I can go ahead and wait until a year or two later when the GOTY/ultimate edition comes out and they have a sale, getting for $20 what originally was $80+.

As for your situation, the stuff that you re-purchase will just go to waste. You're buying a complete package that comes together, not all the individual parts like if you bought the base game + DLC. So you won't be able to gift out the parts of DA Ultimate that you already own.

edit for:
As far as gifting I am not surprised I can't break it up. Will it override my saved game/character to load the GOTY editions?
Don't think so. The save locations should all be the same.

This is the first gaming I am doing in forever so I have quite a backlog of GOTY editions to buy and play.

I wait for the GOTY editions too, like Oblivion and Borderlands which I got really cheap from Steam a while ago.

I didn’t even get New Vegas for $4.95 in the current sale because I’m sure in 12 months the GOTY will cost the same and include all the expansions. I have plenty of games to keep me busy right now.

the Ultimate edition was onsale on steam for $15. has everything in it. all DLCs+awakening expansion. I personally always get a game when it's in goty//ultimate edition forms which contains all the patches, expansions and DLCs. This is if you don't mind play something a few years later after it came out.

GOTY is usually the way to go or you end up with the exact issue OP has. I knew I should wait on Skyrim but I couldn't help myself - a triple AAA title for $40 was nice. :)

Yea, the rise of GotY style selling games piecemeal before that concept has lead me to not spend money on games until I can get the whole game for 10$ or less instead of being willing to spend 50$ on a game.

I guarantee you I spend less money on games since the GotY selling started. They've trained me like Pavlov's dog to wait for GotY versions of games on a Steam sale for $20 or less. The only reason to play a game at release anymore is if you really love the game. Skyrim was the only "must have" for me this year (edit: last year or 2011) and I'm even somewhat regretful of buying that at release due to the consolization of the game. The game's native interface will be fixed by modders, but if the mod community wasn't there or they were locked out of providing these fixes, I probably wouldn't have purchased the game at all (yes, I feel the console interface on the PC is just that clunky and game breaking).

I think many these games is much much more than 50, if you get say ME2, the game is like 40ish, then they sell like another $30-40 DLC on top of that, you can easily spent over 100, yet the DLC is very short like 1-2 hours, not sure it's all worth the 30-40 at all. I think I like games like Witcher better, they sell you the entire thing no strings attached, plus no DRM attached either. That company gets my money.

I should have waited for GOTY for Arkham City and Skyrim, but I got them as Christmas presents, and I downloaded the challenge maps while they were still free, so don't feel to bad.

Having the GOTY edition, I can say all it is is the game with all the DLC. The DLC is still seperate and you have to activate it seperately. It shouldnt be any different than if you purchased the DLC seperately. Back up your saves, but they should still work with the GOTY version of DA:O.

Ahh SirStev0 where were you a week ago when we could have suggested tons of games for super cheap with the holiday sale going on. Pretty much all the places have went into "normal" mode now since they just finished up big sales.

The best deal I see around looking is Fallout 3 GOTY that is on sale for $9.99 50% off at Direct2Drive for today

RE: Skyrim and future GOTY - there is already more things to do and more hours to be spent than most people will already get their head around. I could care less about Skyrim GOTY. I have Arkham City GOTY from Steam - to be honest I didn't do any of the extra content - I guess I run the original story than sorta move on.

One game that I have had fun with recently is Divinity II: Dragon Knight Saga. You can get it for fairly cheap and is a solid action/RPG with very good RPG elements. (meaning: no weaksauce Mass Effect BS).

Good voice, good writing, though it gets highly repetitive in the 3rd act. I played it quite regularly, but haven't loaded it back up since grabbing Skyrim for $40. I'm not sure how the second pack of that plays out, or how long it is (Dragon Knight saga = 2 games), but it's a damn good buy that can generally be found for $20-30, I think.

I paid $10 during the Steam TG sale, and they had it for that price, again, at least two more times after that--daily deal and X-mas. I suspect it will be on daily again, soon.

yeah, that's why I didn't wait for Skyrim GOTY. I figured $40 was a good price, and the content is already spectacular. If I enjoy it enough, it will already be one of those games where I look forward to getting back into for the new content down the road.

Will have to try to grab it when the price drops. Running for 40 buck on amazon and steam right now.

I swear I did this once before where i skipped all the after holiday sales and then ended up with a ton of free time on my hands and no video games.

wow, 40 bucks again? I guess that will be standard price very soon.

Get it.

well, well worth it.

I'm a GOTY, wait a year, type of whore myself...but this one is worth it.

Oh--are you talking about Arkham City? nvm....
I'm definitely waiting for ~$15 on that one. That's what I payed for AA.

I was actually speaking of Divinity II. Just quoted the wrong post.

I will probably hold off on Skrim. TBH I tried Marrowind and just never could get into it... No real excuse as why. Makes me hesitant to buy.

Me too. I have tried Morrowwind 3 times now, and each time I have only played the first day for maybe a half hour and never started it again. I liked Oblivion, but took a while to get into it, and I enjoy Skyrim more than Oblivion. Although I have to admit that I prefer the Witcher 2 to Skyrim, but Skyrim is a good game in its own right.

EDIT: That reminds me, I suggest you just get the Witcher 2, since it is often on sale for cheap and it is probably the best RPG released in the last few years.

Well, I'm the same. I hate Morrowind. played for maybe 20 hours...just couldn't get into it. This was a year or so prior to Oblivion being released, and I figured I was just not going to like TES games.

That's why I say with conviction that Skyrim is damn good--as I expected that I couldn't get into it.

I think some of the mechanics that most fans loathe with Skyrim--the end of level-based stats (only three categories to choose for each level) has actually helped with me. Less chance of creating an unplayable character by the end of mid-game.

I Played the first Witcher (UK version) and honestly feel it was one of the best games I have ever had the honor to play. Believe me, Witcher 2 is on a short list of games I am keeping my eye on for a price drop.

Speaking of which, is there a Ult/GOTY edition out for The Witcher 2?

So far, the Witcher games have pretty much given you the complete game upon the initial release.

Strange, I know...
