Ultima Underworld games getting a sequel

GiggityGiggityGiggityGiggityGiggityGiggity!!!
*buttscootches across the room*

Must support such awesomeness!

I'll so be backing this need to up my level of backing on SToA; been having fun in the pre alpha.......we need to get this going; I'm almost positive I have this free from gog might go back and play it 😀

Oh look, another Kickstarter based on "omg nostalgia, give us money"...

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this come about, as I'd love to continue my Ultima Underworld quest, but I just don't take Kickstarter's seriously.

Do they actually have rights to the Ultima name for this or will there be a C&D coming at some point?

edit: NM, it doesn't use "Ultima" at all.

Not sure why, I'm only familiar with one Kickstarter game going to crap. Tides of Numera, Grim Dawn and Project Eternity were all funded extraordinarily well and look to be releasing soon in full.

fwiw, I *would* probably kickstart this but I never liked the Underworld games. I preferred the actual Ultima games themselves.

Shadowrun Returns, Divinity Original Sin, Wasteland 2...all kick starter games.

The upcoming Pillars of Eternity is one as well.

Not sure why you don't take it seriously.

Historical note: I think Ultima Underworld was the first first-person dungeon crawler.
Depends, the first 3d First person free roaming game was Corporation (90) on the AMIGA, A high tech lab, genetic monsters, hacking, etc (system shock many years before it).. Id's 3d stuff was in early 92, and Underworld was late 92. Dungeon, as in the fantasy way, 3d Catacombs was before it.

BUT Ultima Underworld was easily the best looking, had TRUE 3d, you could go up and down in a spot, not up and down with just ramps. Ultima Underworld needs some mad props, it was one of the 2 games that made me forget my AMIGA and move to a PC (wing Commander was the other).

I don't take it seriously, because consumers accepting the risk of development is a terrible idea. And, just because someone did something great 20 years ago does not mean they are able to succeed in the current climate.

I am about as big of an Ultima lover as they come, and I still didn't back Garriott's Kickstarter. The reason we have publishers (and record labels) is to pay someone TO create something for sale upon completion. If we start allowing these developers to run their own studios and manage their own timelines, we are going to go back to the 3DRealm days... Hell, even Bungie ran into terrible product manager problems with Destiny and Activision forced them to get their shit together and release something.

I didn't pay Garriott to create something for sale upon completion. I commissioned Garriott to create something for delivery to me upon completion.

The distinct difference is that I will not have to pay again once the deliverable is completed. This is the same reason I refuse to fund any title or pay for any "beta access" that I'm not actually receiving permanent access to the final deliverable of said title with that initial payment. Any dev that wants a their cake and be allowed to eat it too can suck it.

If everyone had your view then the excellent shadowrun and wasteland 2 games would never have been made, and the even better Divinity Original Sin would have been a cut back version.

Publishers simply don't back these type of games. You'll notice many of these kick started games only got publishers after their success on kickstarter (after they saw the demand for it)

I might be more excited about this then shroud of the avatar. I backed SOTA because I think it might breathe a little fresh air in the genre. I would LOVE to see another underworld!

The lower tiers only get the first of five games in the series, and it has cash store items also. I got the $90 tier including the first three games, because of some discounts.

Bards tale came way before, but calling it a first person might be a bit of a stretch. I suppose it was just not much to look at.

Then maybe eye of the beholder.

Anyhow this looks truly promising will consider cheers 😀

if you are looking at that type of 3-D, Ulitma 1 had 3D wireframe dungeons, not sure if that was the first one (doubt it). But Bards tale was much later. But as you say, not what this thread is about. I'm excited about it myslef.

It's making in-roads into the 600k but I wouldn't say it's booming along. I don't think it will make many, if any, stretch goals which is a shame.

That's understood.

I backed a first responder amount knowing this, that way I can get a feel of the quality of the game when it gets released and whether I will want to purchase the following titles afterwards. Will I pay more this way? Probably. I won't get "kickstarter swag" this was, but that stuff is generally not worth the bits and bytes it's printed on anyway. I'm minimizing my risk in any event.
