KYIV, Ukraine (AP) - An exit poll showed opposition challenger Viktor Yushchenko with a commanding lead over Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in Ukraine's presidential run-off Sunday.

The poll, conducted under a program funded by several western governments, showed Yushchenko with 58 per cent of votes, compared with 39 per cent for Yanukovych.

It was based on responses by 20,000 voters at polling places throughout the country up to 3 p.m., according to the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, which co-ordinated the effort.

The guy already survived a attempt on his life, let see if Kuchma and the oligarchs will let him take power. There were lots of stories beforehand about potential voter fraud.

Here is a bit of background info on why this is a significant vote:

The final round of Ukraine?s presidential election, to be held on Sunday, is officially neck-and-neck between the two candidates?one proposing integration with western Europe, the other seeking to stay close to Moscow. The outcome will be important not just for Ukraine but for Russia and the rest of eastern Europe
