UK military plane crashes in Iraq

A British military transport plane has crashed in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

There was no immediate word on casualties, but the RAF plane's wreckage was scattered over a large area, according to reports.

The C-130 Hercules, en route from Baghdad to the city of Balad, crashed about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north west of Baghdad, say US officials.

The incident was reported at 1725 local time (1425 GMT).

Helicopters are at the scene and have observed the wreckage.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said of the crash: "It has just happened and it is one of ours."

British military chiefs have used the plane as a "workhorse" to transport troops, fuel, ammunition and humanitarian relief.

It is the favoured aircraft of special forces (SAS) and is regarded as being especially of use in Iraq for its ability to land in desert conditions.

Here, let me, bob.

IT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE IF BUSH DID NOT INVADE IRAQ.

Its Bushs fault. He lied. He is Evil. He lied. He is a Donkey. He is evil Incarnate. Iraq was an immoral and illegal war. Bush sucks. He stole the election, also. Did I mention that he lied? Bush lied. He misled us.

It has nothing to do with who you are, bob. It has to do with your little statement about disrespect....

I was watching Skynews and a couple of live reports. Summary:

- it was most likely shot down since the wreckage is scattered over wide area
- many British and American troops feared dead

Blair, in a statement on British television, did not say how
many had died but US President George Bush said both US and British military personnel had lost their lives in the crash.

There had been no previous reports of US deaths.

The C-130 Hercules transport plane involved in the crash on Sunday can carry up to 92 troops, 64 paratroopers or military equipment.

No information has been released about the cause of the
crash, but US officials said helicopters had spotted the
wreckage, which was strewn over a wide area.

"Yet again today we see the sacrifice they (British military
personnel) make," Blair said in his statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who
lost their lives earlier today. They can be so proud of what
their loved ones accomplished. This country and the wider world will never forget them."

Bush paid tribute to the US and British troops who died.

"Their sacrifices were made in a vital cause of freedom, peace
in a troubled region, and a more secure future for us all," he
said in televised comments from the White House.

Bound for Balad

The British Defence Ministry, announcing the crash earlier
in the day, said: "An RAF C-130 Hercules crashed at around 1725 local time (1425 GMT) on 30 January some 30km (19 miles) northwest of Baghdad."

Media reports said the aircraft was on its way to the city
of Balad from Baghdad when it crashed.

Balad houses one of the largest US airbases in Iraq and has two runways, according to Britain's Press Association newswire. Its 25-square-kilometre airfield is protected by a 20-kilometre security perimeter.

British and US troops were helping Iraqi forces provide
security on Sunday as Iraqis voted in the first national
election since the US-led invasion in March 2003.

On Wednesday, 30 US marines and one sailor were killed
when an American military helicopter crashed close to the
Jordanian border in the deadliest single incident for American
troops since they invaded Iraq.

The rants come a dime a dozen from people like you. I'm glad you labeled yourself accurately though.

Jazeera Tape Appears to Show UK Plane Hit in Iraq
http://story.news.yahoo.com/ne...31/ts_nm/iraq_plane_dc
DUBAI (Reuters) - Arabic television channel Al Jazeera aired a videotape on Monday purporting to show an Iraqi insurgent group firing a missile that downed a British transport plane in Iraq (news - web sites).

The video, issued by the 1920 Revolution Brigades, also showed an explosion at a distance and burning debris of a what appeared to be a plane on the ground, including an engine, filmed at close range in a large field.

British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said 10 servicemen were missing, believed killed, in Sunday's crash. Defense experts said it could have been shot down.

Al Jazeera said it had received a copy of the tape from the group, which has claimed responsibility for some attacks and kidnappings in the past.

The group has often released videos of attacks on U.S. troops on the leading Arabic broadcaster.

The British Hercules transport plane crashed near Baghdad on Sunday, making it the deadliest incident for Britain since the start of the war.

A little-known Islamic militant group whose claims have in the past been discounted said earlier that it had downed the plane.
Why don't we start following the people that deliver these tapes and trace them back to the insurgents?

I was wondering how a C130 can be downed by an older-model SAM (you need 3 or 4 of those to bring down a beast like that), but apparently they used an antitank rocket because the plane was flying low.

Why don't we start following the people that deliver these tapes and trace them back to the insurgents?

The real questions should be...

How do some of these news reporters manage to be on scene for things like this. I know in this case that this was an insurgent video but there are now three well known cases where US media were on hand for 'spontaneous' events. One of which is sickening. A reporter and his photographer jut happened to be out and about at the exact time two election officials were being executed. This same combo 'just happened' to run into the same thing the next day. Then there is the 'car bomb' that was obviously staged (it was burining oil) and nowhere near the school that was claimed to have been leveled.

Some reporters over there (the ones not in the mainstream press) are getting advanced knowledge of murder and refusing to report it. If you ask me, they are sick. How do I know it is not the mainstream press? Well, reporters from the mainstream US press never leave the Green Zone.

Actually the only reporters I have seen outside of the Green Zone over the last year or so just happen to be from that horrible news outlet, Fox. Hmm, the guys no one trusts are the only ones actually doing their jobs.

Reporters from the mainstream press do leave the Green Zone. If they do, they risk being kidnapped so most go along as embeds.

And, btw, got links for your conspiratorial claims above?
