Its worth sticking with the series (or jumping in, it doesn't really matter which order you read them in).http://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2015/mar/12/terry-pratchett-in-quotes-15-of-the-best

Yeah, I had no idea that you could easily go out of order, which is definitely helpful.

Resist the urge to make reading a discworld book into a chore. I don't care what the turtle's name is any more than you do, but I like that he has one. It makes him the discworld turtle instead of just some generic turtle in my mind. Besides, what self respecting world that rides on the back of a turtle would neglect to give it a name? It only makes sense...

Well, I think the issue is that I don't know if I should care what the turtle's name is. Is he pivotal to the plot? Should I remember it? I'm terrible with names, and especially using ones that aren't very common (the turtles name looked almost like an ancient Egyptian name). It reminds me of when I read the description for Final Fantasy XIII with the "fal'Cie" and "l'Cie". My first thought was, "Why do we have these weird names!? Whatever happened to generic names like 'The Empire'?" (More of a reference to Final Fantasy VI than Star Wars.)

It reminds me of the Honest Trailer for Game of Thrones, which had a montage of characters and jokingly were only able to name a handful. 😛

I would also recommend starting with Guards Guards! or Reaper Man, the intro sounds like the beginning of The Color of Magic.

Yes, I did start with the first one, The Color of Magic. I took your advice and bought a copy of Reaper Man and Guards! Guards!, so we'll see how they are. Surprisingly, Barnes & Noble was only a few cents more expensive than Amazon.

I built this tableau of Death attempting to get drunk, that was auctioned at the first North American Disc World Convention where I encountered Sir Terry in the elevator one evening, a very charming and likeable person. Other photos from that amazing convention are open to public viewing.

Reaper man is my favourite. Must have read it at least half a dozen times.

I went to a book signing event once after work. I didn't have any of the books with me (had everything he had written to that point I think), so I asked him to sign one of the company backup tapes instead. Since we switched to a different backup system a while later and those old tapes became obsolete I erased it with a magnet and kept it myself.

That's pretty win right there.

I love that bit when DEATH is trying to be human.
