So, I was listening to Howard Stern on my portable radio as I was walking to my CIS class, just a few minutes ago. I was daydreaming of Michelle Rodreguiz, she was on the show, I noticed this piece of paper on the side walk. I picked it up, cause it seemed to be a check, and low and behold it was. It was to the payorder of some gentleman for a decent amount. On the check it only had the guys name and address and the company that issued the check. OK, cool. So when I got to class I jumped on the pc and typed in switchboard.com and got the guys number. Called his house just rang no answering machine, I hung up. I then searched our online campus directory for this guy, but no luck there. I then jumped on google and searched for a number for the company that issued the check. I found it, but they are closed, I think they run at mountain time, doh. So now I am morally obligated to keep trying every hour untill I find this guy because I probably know the torment of loosing this amount of money. Ah well...any other ideas on how I can find this guy? Or just wait and call every hour.

You're doing exactly what I'd do... keep at it. If you don't have the time, simply leave a msg on the guy's answering machine.

Too bad it's a guy huh? :D

It's nice of you to try and hunt him down. If he has half a brain, when he realizes he's lost the check he'll probably call the company to inform them. They'll stop payment on that check and send him another.

I'd try to contact him once more this afternoon and then maybe again this evening. If you can't get a hold of him, just destroy the check.

What are the restrictions on depositing a check with SOMEONE ELSE'S name on it? If I found a check for any amount, I wouldn't be able to cash or deposit the check if it wasn't in my name, right ?

That's how it should work. Any halfway competent teller will check the name in the Pay To of the check and ask for ID/check the signature. If you did somehow manage to get it cashed, at least with a check of this amount, the company may try and hunt you down.

I think you would need to have an ID of somesort to show that you are the person on the check, but you want to deposit the check into someone elses account (maybe also need some other forms of id). One could also create a fake ID, if you have the tools, and then go to a local check cashing facility and get the check cashed. This guy I once new, friend of a friend, use to make fake checks and used a Pensylvania ID (no pictures on DL) and passed alot of bogus checks. He eventually got busted by the FEDs. I think this guy had ties to some sort of Croatian mafia or somthing, all I know is that his house was very sweet and he always threw some sweet parties.

Sure you can! Finders keepers, you know. The bank doesn't care who it's made out to. That's why so many companies use a PO Box - because if they had their mail delivered to a mailbox, someone could steal their mail and cash all the checks.

Not.

There are ways to cash it, whether the bank would allow that or not is a different story.

I'd keep trying to contact him, if after 2 days no luck, I'd mail it back to the issuing bank and let them deal with it.

You do. Either way, it's tracked. You can't cash a check at a bank unless 1. you have a checking account at that bank or 2. you show your driver's license which is recorded.

Like I said, if the check is never cashed, nobody loses any money. The check just gets voided and the owner of the check can just write another one. It's not like a money order where it's paid ahead of time. But if you cash it, you are definitely screwed.

don't cash it, like others have mentioned. If you can't get a hold of the guy, just burn the check (or tear it up).

I was never planning on cashing the check, lol, if a career in medicine doesnt work, I was pondering joing the FBI (i think a criminal record would hurt that, ;) ). I have been trying to get a hold of the guy all morning, :)

The Pennsylvainia thing was I think it was about 7 years ago...I dont know if it was a DL, State Id or even from Pennsylvania. Like I said it was a friend of a friend, who told me this. I just went to a couple parties that the guy threw.

The reason I didnt mail it out yet, was cause if the guy was on campus I could give him a check. I found it on campus so I presume the guy must be on campus. I was hoping he had voice mail and he checks his msgs, but he doesn't. He isn't listed on our campus website so he has no email. If I dont find this guy, I plan on calling up the company that issued the check, whenever 7:30 mountain time is, and tell them that I found it and that they should cancel it and send him out a new one

Must have...cause all I know was that I went to about 3 of this guys parties. They parties were real cool in a real nice house we went because one of our friends was a a good friend with that guy. A few months later we asked what happened and to that dude and he said he was busted by the feds for passing bad checks using a fake id from a state.

State ID's look like drivers license.. they ALSO have pictures. :) Must not have been PA.. or he was fibbing :)

True.

My wife has an Oregon state issued ID card which looks just like a drivers license at a quick glance but it does say on it not a license to drive.

Actually, the issuing company will probably have to pay a stop payment fee. Of course, this would be nowhere near $1500, more like $20 or less (depends on the size of the company's account with the bank).
