I'm watching cops, and this cop pulls over an older car in a nicer area because he 'didn't belong in these parts, and is thus suspicious'

is that legal?

"what determines 'suspicious vehicle'"

Lots of things are considered suspicious. Slow driving, driver looking all around, stopping for long amounts of time at stop signs, not matching the demographic, irratic driving, circling... lots of things.

In New Jersey, being black counts as suspicious.

Right or wrong, most cars you see pulled over have black drivers...

In a so called black neighbourhood ?

It's easier to say "suspicious vehicle", then "I don't like the look of them, time for a beat down"

If it looks like the driver of the vehicle will be unable to afford a lawyer. Seriously. Because any lawyer worth a mail-order law degree can beat a "probable cause on the basis of looking suspicious" contention.

I've seen more white people pulled over than black people in NJ

yeah, depends on the place of course, if there are more black people situated in an area, odds are better you will see more of that... if it's primarily white, you will see more white drivers pulled over. not a big deal.

is that legal?

- Racial profiling

- Driving erratically

- Looks like he's casing the neighborhood

- Car problem (lights out, etc.)

- The cops feel like hassling someone because they look like riff-raff

A lot of stuff seems to fall under the "suspicious" category at least from what I've seen on Cops.

Of course it is. If you see a $80 Cadillac XLR driving down the streets of harlem, are you going to think "wow, that piece of crap fits in perfectly with the rest of the broke-ass bitches that live in Harlem too"? Or are you going to think "drug money, f'sho!"?

When you're a police officer, you see so much of the "bad people" so often that it starts to routinely become your first thought after quite some time. Pulling over an expensive car in a broke neighborhood is different than pulling over someone because they're black (because I just KNOW some stupid moron is going to pull the race card) or something.

I'm not sure what I'd think about an $80 XLR. I'd probably want to know where they bought it.

If something is suspicious we don't pull them over "because" of that. It doesn't take long for anyone to violate a traffic law, even something minor, so it's worth it to wait until they do so...then light 'em up.

The overwhelming majority of traffic cites I review and file ON A DAILY BASIS are white males and asian males. Not sure where you're getting your info.

It might have something to do with the fact that I live near Newark, NJ - car theft capitol of the world...

You just have to have a black guy involved and that adds the "suspicious" to "vehicle.
Damn man, everyone knows that.
