I hope you accept this as on topic, it is my SetiQueue. According to the above link I need a clean boot disk, I havent made one, am I doomed?

I am currently running the AVG free virus scanner hopefuly that can do something.

In the event that I have to reformat, I guess I'll just install WindowsXP.

Do you think the system restore feature will work? I doubt it, I think it infected lots of files.

Unless your virus scanner can clean it all up (and that's assuming that it hasn't infected the virus scanner also to prevent proper disinfection), I'd suggest a complete reinstall (not to mention that WinXP would be worlds better than WinME) to make sure you're starting from a known good state.

I agree completely with jliechty. The latest viruses now-a-days always attack the AV programs first. 🙁

Thanks for the replys, the virus program ended up deleting most of the .exe files on my computer therefore rendering most programs useless. SetiQueue was not harmed, and I fully intend to save it. How would I? I assume I install it from the origional file and then copy the folder over the top?

I have to install WindowsME because I need Microsoft Works that comes with it.

Mmmm... you're getting hit with a virus that has been known since 1999??? Might want to try a different virus scanner than AVG after the re-install.

Are you using a recovery CD? Didn't Microsoft Works came in a separate CD?

One of the machiine at my other workplace got hit with a number of viruses last April. The computer kept on locking up. I scanned it with Norton 2003 & removed the viruses. Unfortunately, the SETI client was infected as well. My SETIQ started to drop the results from the infected machine🙂 The client didn't register as a virus but someone it was modified. The filesize is bigger than what it should be. I had to replace it as well.

Precisely why I am 80% Linux. Not too many virus/trojan programs
written for Linux. I had my XP PRO killed by MoSucker3.0, backdoor
trojan. The first thing that it attacked was Norton Firewall/Norton AV.
Left me helpless.... Rebuilt the machine, just for Quake 3.

I dont run a virus scanner, I just downloaded AVG after I got it.
Norton Ghost came on the driver CD for my 8RDA+, but it is a command line version. I dont know if I want to mess with that.

Yes, It is a recovery CD, Microsoft Works is built into the install.

It makes me so mad, especialy since I specificaly thought that the file might be a virus before I INSTALLED it.

I would strongly suggest running an AV program after things are back up and running. 😉

And as far as AVG, I've run Norton and McAfee AV products, and currently run AVG. When I first installed AVG, it found some infected files in a ZIP file that NORTON and McAfee didn't pickup.

And running any AV product with the latest updates still doesn't give you 100% protection from brand new viruses. They will protect you from the old ones though.

I installed WindowsXP and all is good, got my Queue back up and running too.
The only problem is the stupid Windows activation. It tells me that I have activated it too many times, argh, time to call Microsoft.
