Uh oh, will people switch to PAID processing instead of Distributed.net?

came across a banner for this the other day, I signed up just to check it out, but havent done any work for them yet, they say they will have projects that pay per work unit starting up soon, I guess they will be doing stuff for high detail video rendering (maybe Pixar?), the national weather service, NASA, and some other government stuff. Sounds interesting.....

Most of my herd could not be switched as the computers belong to my employer. It would be highly unethical and I'm sure against company policy to be paid for their work.

Edit: Didn't ProcessTree recently merge with Dcypher.net?

I think that most of TA is doing these projects for the challenge, the competition and the love of computing. I don't really see a lot of our people jumping ship for a few pennies in some techno-Amway scheme.

Here's the key:

<< for a few pennies >>

It would not be a very sizeable sum, otherwise it would be more cost effective to set up their own crack racks, a la Borg Cube. :)

yeah, another good point

I did the alladavantage thing on my comp for a while, but i got like 2 checks for $25 over a 4 month period, wasnt worth it.

But ProcessTree also says they will have team competitions, if that happens, it would be just like RC5 except some money on the side. Not to mention you get a % of the money from the people you sign up. If i had a choice of doing RC5 for free, and RC5 for a few extra dollars a month, i think its an easy choice.

Train, I doubt too many people would go to ProcessTree because of the legal issues. A lot of our power is from large herds/outer fringe machines, where the owner wouldn't agree to having the client on there because the user gets paid. So, I don't see Dnet losing any major numbers any time soon.:)

There is another problem with this method. People with more money have faster computers, and people with faster computers will be able to crack their way to more money.

Ie. Russ could probably get the same amount as me in a matter of hours which would have taken me erm...... more than a month.

EDIT: With respect to the video processing/Pixar suggestion, wouldn't it be good if your computer could pay for your ticket? :)

I dunno, that site looks a lil cheap. The payment would probably not amount to anything. They probably just sell the information on users that have signed up :D

I will switch those computers I own to PAID processing just to eliminate the extra $4-5/per PC electricity bill for distribution computation

I think that my 2 non-profits could profit by it. :)

I will definitely give it a look.

If the payoff is worth it I'd switch my 4 PC home herd. I've got 4 boxes here P3-600/650/700 & Celeron 366@500 (all overclocked of course) here that can crank out units. Like others have said, at least it would pay the power bill right? I'd still keep my 15 PC work herd on SETI though. Morals suck. ;)

after electricity is paid for (and tax if you declare it) would you be left with much, if so how much? and consider what benefits other than cash you mite get from it, most of us a competative stats junkies, i dont suppose there are stats on this project? and i belive that boberfett is right, its unethical to use machines from your place of employment for this (which would count out most if not all of the high output crowd, me included), unless you own the place of course! but still its an interesting thought, one i had thought of quite a while ago, when i first heard of rc5 and hadnt realised that there were other DC projects, or there weren't at the time.

actually, i think i stated this above, ProccessTree is also going to have teams, just like distributed.net, and as most of you might agree, the only reason they get so many people is because of the team competition.

Not to mention if you sign someone up, you get a % of thier income, so even if you cant convert you work PC's it would be ok to convince your boss to have the company make a few bucks a month on PC idle time, like any manager would say no to free extra money paying off his bills. and even though you arent getting that money, since you referred them, you get a % of it.
