WinXP SP1. I start up today, get to the windows splash screen and a box pops up "explorer.exe unable to start, can't find component uxtheme.dll". I click ok in the box, and get just a blank blue screen. Mouse works but there's nothing to click on.

Any ideas? Did a virus do this or is it some random windows problem?

I have not been using StyleXP or anything like that. Haven't installed any software since the last successful boot.

uxtheme.dll is a file used for theme control. This problem can occur if you were trying the uxtheme.dll hack so that you can use unsigned themes on your computer. I think you are best off doing a Repair Installation.

actually it was an easy fix after poking around google a bit. that dll is backed up in /system32/servicepackfiles/i386. all I had to do was start in safe mode w/command line and use my l337 DOS skills to copy it over to system32. very strange, as I had done nothing with theme hacks or anything like that. while I was at it I saved that file on another HD, a CD-RW, and a floppy for future insurance ;) tks for the replies.
