Uh oh... it's happening

Ok, I just sold my 3rd generation iPod and am looking to replace it.

I've been looking at the only real alternative that looks appealing to me, the Creative Zen Touch.

I like the fact that the Zen Touch has 24hr battery life (that's sweet), and it looks pretty cool and has excellent sound quality. However, it's $300 and I can get a new iPod for $370 so its not like I'm saving a buttload of money.

Creative Zen:
-Great battery life
-Great sound quality
-Won't get scratched as easily
-Interface,touch pad are flaky
-Creative's software for loading it sucks
-Bigger than the iPod

IPod:
-Decent bettery life
-I liked the sound quality of my old one, so I dunno
-Will get scratched, sucks
-Little more expensive
-iTunes makes loading it very easy (i JUST am starting to like iTunes)
-Love the new 4th gen click wheel
-Smaller than the Zen Touch
-Cool engraving (lol)

Someone tell me what I should do, or offer an alternative because I am seriously starting to look back at the Apple camp and doubt whether I should submit this order for the Zen touch.

I played around with an Ipod over the weekend, and was kinda surprised anyone could like it. I don't know much about mp3 players but it seemed like a pain to navigate on. Loading songs on it did seem easy though. From what I gather on the Ipod if the battery ever screws up you have to send the whole unit in. supposedly on the creatives you can get replacement batteries, which I think would be a big plus.

I like the navigation of the ipod, i mean, at least its simple.

The battery thing though is a legitimate complaint though, but I think you can get like $30 battery replacements for the Ipod now, though not official.

haha...when i first read the title, i thought it was gonna be one of those, "I was cuddling with my gf...and.."

I don't know, IPOD are cool, I saved some money and bought a Dell DJ...so far so good.

Yeah I figured I would save some money, but in reality its only like $70 so I'm starting to wonder if its worth it... I dunno

well, another reason i went with a dell is because every other guy at my school has an ipod. the dell dj was the only one that was compariable to an ipod as far as their size. the 16hr battery life was a plus. (of course, this was awhile ago, I'm sure you have a lot more choices now.) although i have to be honest, I really wish I had an IPOD mini sometimes, conisdering i only have about 4 gigs worth of mp3s.

The iaudio 40gb m3 is under $350, same size as the iclod, has an FM tuner, will play dragged & dropped music (no buggy proprietary software needed), has better battery life, and has better sound quality.

Do mom & pop mind about the extra $$? Itz wurth it 2 luk kewl 2 ur frendz, d00d!!1!1

go for it. You'll find alternatives are annoying to brouse through the tunes because nothing has anything comparable to the scrollwheel of the iPod.
Some believe the iPod's sound quality to be inferior to other devices, but there really is no noticable difference in *real world* usage. If you sit in a quiet room with a huge set of headphones that set you spent £200 on then yes you may hear a difference, but otherwise you most likely won't. It's also very dangerous to be walking around on the streets with *all* background noise blocked out.

iTunes is a fantastic application and does everything you could possibly require. It would be frustrating to resort back to mucking around with a filing system (which is truly terrible on a windows PC) from using a very neatly put together app. Sure it uses a fair amount of memory (not really much in today's standards) but it also DOES so much. The idea is you organise and do the fancy stuff in iTunes in order to keep the player nice and simple. Who wants to be re-organsing files and all that when you're on the go?! All you want to do is click 'play' and then forget the device.

The battery life is significantly better these days, and the iPods no longer use any power when switched off (I found this quite annoying). They last plenty long enough for a day's usage, but are also slim and sleek to match.

Overall a top of the line piece of kit. Couple this with all the neat accesories that are available for the iPod (for example, Bose makes an iPod speaker/dock unit which is seriously cool). Check out the top 25 accesories here.

Furthermore the styling is sweet. People say they scratch easily but I've not found that to be the case. My iPod if 18 months old and doens't really have a scratch on it at all.

Cheaper one is about a 19% savings over the iPOD. The thing plays music. Either unit will play music and works well. Personally, I'd like to take my $70 (+ additional tax?) and either buy more music with it or save it.

you buy music?? 🙂

i am in a quandry as well... i am debating between getting a iPod Mini, Creative Zen Micro, or a 20GB iPod...

my little sister has a zen micro on the way @ the moment... i will get a chance to play with it... if its not cool... i will jump on the apple bandwagon...

Get the Creative, and save yourself the $$$. They both essentially do the same thing, so why pay over $100 more for the iPod?

Argh still cant' decide!

The Cowon iAudio looks sweet, but I'm not sure how the small LCD on the remote will work... seems like it will be difficult to manage a lot of music, plus there's no 40GB version which is what I'm really looking for.

i've had a dell dj and an ipod

my ratings:
dell 5 (and it was free)
ipod 9

the itunes software is the best i've used (and i've used a lot) and everything just works. I went back to the dj just to clear off all my songs to give to a co-worker and it was an extreme pain in the butt. Plus, the dj works best if you sync with dudebox software which will cost you $20, so the price savings quickly gets eaten up by 3rd parties.

More like 50% / $100. The 20gb ipod is $300 vs $200 for the 40gb Creative Zen Xtra. For $100 less, you get better sound quality & battery life, and twice the capacity. Both are no-frills music players; ie. no bonus features, etc. Although the ipod conveys the child/stupid/trendy image, which I'd actually pay money to not be a part of...

OP - If you need help making a decision, it'd help to know what your priorities are - what's your budget, and how highly do you value "value" (ie. quality for price paid)? How highly do you value features, such as a line-in, recording, or an FM tuner? How highly do you value sound quality? And yes, how highly do you value what trendy/stupid/very young people think of you? (that last included because it's the only thing the ipod has going for it)

i dunno.... i have this archos Gminix thing someone got me, 20gb, easy to navigate, $250, i just plug it in, its seen as a mass storage device, copy + paste music into the music folder and the tags automatically file and sort everything by artist & album etc. I'm pretty sure just about every mp3 players does this? whats so great about the ipod? its also smaller than the ipod mini but it's a few mm thicker. Has a bigger screen than the ipod too.

I have an ipod and I'm happy with it. Screw the haters 😛. iTunes is buggy? Winamp has sh!t sounding output and tons of people use that. I've never had iTunes crash and I've been using it since it was released for the PC, even when I wasn't using an ipod I used iTunes.

I don't use it much now, only really for external mp3 storage, but it really is a well built piece of hardware 🙂. Firmware upgrade fixed some bad sounding output that I had when I first got it.
