Well I just got an XBox and I was thinking of how cool it would be to have Dolby Digital surround sound - not just for it, but for my DVD player and computer as well (Soundblaster Audigy). Currently I have an aging Sony bookshelf system - attached to it are the two speakers that it came with, and two Altec Lansing speakers that are of better quality (don't ask about the horrible wiring job). Anyway, I was interested in getting a receiver to power all of these things :) I want Dolby Digital & DTS - I don't need THX or anything unbelievable, but something that can last a few years (5 maybe?) till I get a real job :). Also, can I do Dolby Digital with only 4 speakers, or do I need the final speaker and a sub? Would the 4 speakers I have be adequate, or would I be shootin myself for the crappy sound? They sound fine playing mp3z now, connected via a stereo miniplug to RCA adapter to my bookshelf system. Budget for the receiver is around $200-250, and I'd prefer to go with a major brand, rather than a small unknown outfit. Thanks.

The system would be used mostly to play mp3z, occasionally some gaming, use the Xbox, and the occasional movie (maybe 1/2 a month).

Has anybody had any experience with the Pioneer VSX-D710S? It has Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic and a bunch of inputs - only 2 optical and 1 coaxial digital ones though - I guess this should be enough - plus a bunch of A/V inputs. Also has component video switching (not really necessary for now, b/c neither my TV nor DVD player have it, but it would be nice in the future). The only thing it is missing is Dolby Pro Logic II - is this necessary? I can get the receiver for $260 from ikesound. Can I do better for the money?
