I personally shave up to down, and then down to up afterwards. It's the only way that I can make sure it's smooth. Going up to down first shortens most of the hair, and going down to up wipes it all out.

And generally, shaving during or after a shower will feel much better than doing so beforehand. The hot water softens the facial air and opens your pores. It also cleans the dirt off your face, so you aren't scraping the skin clear and then shoving muck all over your raw face. I generally rinse with hot and then cold water afterwards.

Edit: And man, they're giving out Mach 3's now? When I turned 18, I just got the regular Gilette...whatever it was called back in the day. You know, the grey, metal razor. Loved it back then, though.

well after my last post I just stood up and went to shave...

I first put some water on my face to wet it.

Then I put some cream on my hand -i haven't used cream before I sprayed what i thought would be good.

Um it was a little too much I think ;) So i have to clean my hands agin. I started to shave and I only cut myself 6 times which is pretty good for the first time I guess.

Then I began the swiping...and it removed a LOT OF hair...the razor never got close to this (a panasonic one from bestbuy) when it comes to the amount it takes off.

Then i shaved by the goatee region and a minute after that my neck started to burn...BADLY! I didn't know what was going on so i just started splashing water. It went away but whatever...I shaved the rest and i'm suprised by all the hair on my face that I didn't know existed or something.

Though am I supposed to buy some after shave or is that not necessary anymore?

Um, there is only one thing you need to know about using a razor.

Always move it perpendicular to the blade. Which is to say, pull down on the handle to shave. (or, pull up if you are holding it upside down, like on your neck) If you were to move it side to side, just a bit, you'll carve nice mach 3 shaped lines into your face.

Up and down = good shave. Side to side = major blood loss.

This is the kind of lesson you only have to learn once, but it's nice if someone warns you. It's also how you learn that your face will keep bleeding for an hour if you cut yourself when you're in a hurry to go somewhere.

dang peps like to respond to magomago and his stupid remarks....i do not mean to be mean.....but seriously when u are 18 and do not know how to shave....i would call that not being a man. Electric shavers are for pussys man. seriously. excuse the harsh language, but at times like this it is necessary to say what needs to be said.

i always shave before i shower.

I do too - stops the bleeding by the time I get out so I don't look like a douche with TP all over my face and neck if I get cut.

don't forget to experiment with the blade that the barbers use. ;)

make sure you and the shiny blade are alone.

Easiest option is shave in the shower, I rarely cut myself and I never get razor burn, easiest way to shave in my opinion. I use to shave before or after showering and it would always do very bad things to my face.

It's not exactly hard, have you never seen a shaving commercial?

What happened to the days when shaving was a grueling ritual passed down from father to son, involving the mental focus of a samurai, lathering, and a blade sharp enough to split hairs with a feather touch? :p

I think we should all go back to using knives for shaving. Now that's manly!

1. shower/wash
2. soak facial hair with very hot towel, hotter the better.
3. lather face/neck with small amount of water
4. shave in direction of hair growth.
5. [optional] shave in other direction, making sure to keep razor straight.
6. wipe face with hot towel.
7. rince with cold water.
8. [optional] apply aftershave lotion/gel/balm.

I feel left out, I never got any razors on my birthday. I always shave right after I shower in the evening. I can't shaving in the morning, it makes my face really sensitive all day long, it makes exercising especially difficult.

Close, but this is better ;)

1.splash the hottest water you can stand on your face for about 15 seconds
2.with your face still warm and wet, lather on the cream
3.(key)let it stand at least a minute (this will soften the hairs among other things)
4.shave in direction of hair growth with long smooth strokes up and down (perpindicular to razor)
5.(optional)shave opposite of hair growth (only if you want really close shave, be warned this may hurt and can cause in grown hairs)
6.(optional if doing #7)rinse face partially with cold water
7.hop in the shower (take your electric in their with you as a shower toy b/c electrics suck anyway and you don't want to use it)

i got the valupak or whatever....figurd it out on my own, i rarely use cream, i also rarely even wet my face, i just go at it dry , generally in the mornings, i go over things with my electric and then clean up with my razor.....i like going "against the grain" and going against hair growth..., closer that way......seems i cut myself more often with the electric than the razor.......and i also suffer razorburn but i get over it, since i geuss i'm half-pussy
