Read the manual. Same way I found out. ;)

But yes, Erik is correct.
Also, if you click and HOLD on the item the menu will close and you can fling it around the room, or set it down. Thats how you decorate.

Incidentally, if you just started, you cant sell stolen goods in most places. (Unlike Morrowind)
You have to join the thieves guild and do some jobs. Eventually, you will unlock fences.
I have three opened right now. Ongar in Bruma (the first), one in Leyawin and one in Bravil.
So far I've only found two people to remove my bounties. Amand in the Imperial City and Skivva in Bravil.

BE CAREFUL!
If you havent noticed, shopkeepers will follow you around when you try to duck behind a corner. Its easier to wait in the basement until after nightfall and then go looting.

UNLIKE Morrowind, you can grab EVERYTHING in a guildhouse once you join it. Much easier money.

By the way, I have joined every guild except the Imperial Paladins/Knights and own the houses in the Waterfront, Bravil and Layawin. I also got a Chestnut horse.

EDIT: I only found one Oblivion Gate in Kvatch and I havent closed it yet.
Am at level 5 after 3 days. Spent most of my time stealing and fencing.

FURTHUR ADVICE: In the ruins you'll see cute little glowing stones atop pillars. You can grab them with telekinisis or shoot them down with arrows (thanks to the new physics engine).

EDIT 2: Forgot to tell you guys that I found the magic painting. Its pretty freakin cool! Also made one Nirnroot potion. The weakest. Have only got 15 Nirnroots total.

Stupid question but can you join multiple guilds, or do you have to leave the guild you are in to join a different one?

Just try it. ;)

Yes, of course you can. Thats the way it was in the other games too.
HOWEVER, some NPC's in the game have said that the dark brotherhood may conflict with the other guilds. I havent seen it yet, but I am avoiding the brotherhood quests for now.

Same issue in Morrowind. Eventually the Fighters and Thieves got angry at each other.
IF you played your cards right, you could end up stopping the violence and leading both guilds.

EDIT: The first (and easiest) guild is the "Arena". Join up and start fighting. You can use magic in the ring so its an option for everyone. You need to get caught stealing something for an invite from the thieves. You need to commit a murder and then sleep in a safe place for the Dark Brotherhood to contact you.
The fighters and mages will talk to you if you walk in the guild house during the day.

Thanks for the info. I'm already in the Thieves guild but would also like to join the Fighters, especially if I can make a bunch of money taking stuff from the guild house.

Update:

I just got the house in Layawiin!
7,000 gold, but its pretty nice.

All thats left, (that I know of) are the houses in Bruma (10000), Cheydinhal (15000), Choral (20000), Skingard (?) and Anvil (???).

The furnishings are much more expensive than the house itself. Luckily my Imperial Knight has strong personality and charm abilities.

In case you guys are wondering how I got the money, some of the goblin caves have mages with expensive staffs.
And ALWAYS cast some sort of charm or Mercantile enhancing spell right before you do business.

You really should buy the game if you enjoy it.

What makes you say that? I bought the game and I had to figure it out myself. With D2D you have to dl the manual seperately furthermore if you use foxit reader instead of adobe it doesnt want you to download it at all citing that you dont have the required software.

Eh? I'm at max detail with a 7800 GT.

I bought the game and am too lazy to read through the manual. I have been dropping items by dragging into an open area. Real cumbersome way to do it, guess I should rethink the manual policy if shift click is in there.

where do you buy the houses, I went looking once or twice, but never found the people. I've got over 30k gold burning a hole in my pocket and would like some storage! Made master alchemist, it's really nice being able to make potions from just one ingredient, and very profitable. :D
I managed to break my keyboard though while playing, my W key got stuck down, had to switch to my secondary :(

In the imperial city you go to the trade office in the market district. The shack on the waterfront is 2000. See my above post for prices elseware.

All other places you go to the castle and talk to the counts/countesses. Sometimes you'll get referred to the castle butler (Skingrad). Also in Skingrad you cant buy until your Fame gets up high. I talked to them when it was 14 and now its 24, so maybe its opened up.

How could somebody rack up 30,000 and not know this?
Anyway, if you buy the nice one for 20 grand, you'll run out of money before its fully decorated. :D

Yeah, it's stupid, but the manual is actually useful for figuring out how to do things. I guess that's a pretty clear indicator that they botched the UI since it isn't intuitive.

Yeah, because the UI should have had a dropped button.

I think I went through one or two dungeons and then most of the rest was alchemy, heh, very easy to make money, especially when selling to someone at 100 disposition. I don't think I've actually ever been to one of the castles, never had the need.
I'm finding my alchemy rush to be a bit of a disadvantage right now though, I have a hard time killing anything, and I can't get anywhere in dungeons to get better stuff :(
I'm using that apron from the painting guy, some enchanted grievaces (sp?) and the chainmail armor. I think I might reroll a straight fighter, because thats basicly what I'm trying to be anyway, just very unsuccessfully in light armor at level 17 with a glass dagger and very bad blocking skills...

Forgot to tell you guys that I found the magic painting. Its pretty freakin cool! Also made one Nirnroot potion.

Spoiler-ish

Just wondering, has anyone found the "sprig of nirnroot" that starts a quest outside Cheydinhal? Is there another one around, cause I accidentally clicked it (ate it:() in my inventory. I did a quick load, but then died or screwed something up, loaded up a game after I ate it. Then I realized this a few hours later.

Walk around the outside of the lake surrounding the imperial city (like, across the water from the city). I did my collecting to the east, but I'd imagine they're all around it.
