Ughhh... does anyone else hate grad school?

Does everyone else hate grad school, or is it just me?

the emotion you are going through is what we all have in common. We all want to get our degrees as quickly as possible and get the fvck out.

I just started last semester for a psych NP degree. I did okay - 4.0 for both classes, but the idea of doing this for the next 4 years of my life just sucks. Does it get any better?

*sigh* NOT looking forward to this coming semester.

So it isn't just me.

9/10 grad students hate it.
1/10 grad student loves it and ends up becoming a professor.

Just bear with it and look forward to a better salary (hopefully).

Grad school isn't about classes...at least for a PhD.
I'm hating it now because I have quals tomorrow.

Good luck, written quals or Chalk board stand in front of 10 professors type qual?

Written type...and it sucks for me because I've been running experiments and helping with a proposal so have not had decent time for studying.

I haven't even hit the psyche part yet - that should be pretty cool but I probably won't get started on that until next spring. I just finished Advanced Pathophysiology and End of Life Care this semester, and probably will have to take Advanced Pharmacology and Gerontology this semester.

I don't know, maybe it's just sick people overload or something. I spend 4 days at work taking care of whiny, sick people and then spend all my free time learning about whiny sick people.

Not how I imagine my life for the next 3 1/2 years

Don't worry, thats the case for most grad students unfortunately. Consider yourself lucky your qualifier isn't oral where they give you a problem and you solve it at the chalk board closed book and no help from the 10 professors staring you down. (My bro had to go through that at JHU).

At least you are getting the real research done and getting a leg-up in that part of your grad school 'tenure'.

I actually do really enjoy it and would consider coming back as a professor, but I am so stressed about finding a job that it makes everything else more difficult.

Yep, and I'm not even taking it yet😉. Tomorrow is the beginning of my last semester of undergraduate college. After that I'm done and not going back for at least a few years if I do. Too much school, maybe that's wht you're feeling.

Like others said, be happy that you're even in.

yeah definitely good point, whatever you do OP, don't quit. There are many many people who where outright rejected from that grad student position. Its will work out in the end, its just not going to be a fun time unless you make some social networks with other grad students.

On a good day it's an 1 1/2 commute, in Boston rush hour traffic) each way for me. Ughhh...

<--- 5th year PhD candidate studying developmental genetics. It's hard, but if you put in the effort, it's worth it. If you can't motivate yourself to put in the effort, save yourself a few years of misery and find a decent job now.
