I swear lately every time I sell something on eBay, or a message board (not this one), I get these emails. Right now I'm trying to sell something on an Aquarium related forum. I'm selling the item for $30, local pickup. Of course I get an email from someone saying "I will buy it if you sell it for $15 including shipping. Gotta deal?" What? I'm going to sell it for 50% less than I'm trying INCLUDING shipping all the way across the country? What are you smoking?

Another time I was trying to sell a waterproof camera housing, which goes for around $135 plus shipping on eBay normally, and I get an email saying, "I'm a poor college student, I need camera housing. Will you sell for $80 including shipping?" I felt like responding, "Well, I'm a laid-off broke ass tech worker, so the answer is NO!."

It never fails, I get emails like this every time I try to sell somewhere. Is this a new trend? I don't remember having this problem a few years back. Anyone else?

"Hey, I want to buy your <item name> if you sell it for <50-75% less than I'm listing>, with shipping. Deal?"
 
Low-balling is standard practice.
Many times people are in a position where they have to bite.
 
If people make a reasonable offer, I'm willing to listen, but damn, these people don't even try for reasonable.
 
I remember I was selling my GF4 Ti4400 a couple of years ago and I listed for $125 on Craigslist. Literally, a few minutes later, I had 2 or 3 emails from people lowballing me. Just ignore it.

my guess is that with something like that, the price is a bit more subjective, it is harder to match up the price to something , so they feel ok with low balling
 
All you have to do is decline the offer - many things on eBay are inflated to hell. People will often sell at prices far below what they ask on ebay, often because people are desperate for cash flow.

Oh, and live coral is illegal to sell in many states, even if for collector's reasons. Harvesting coral is a federal crime.

Lowballers are just a fact-of-life when trying to sell something. I generally ignore them.

You should try selling a car on AutoTrader. I used to get some great lowballers there. Like one guy called me up and arrogantly offered less than half of what I would get if I sold the car at auction (much less if I just traded it in) and implied that I had to sell to him because I must be desperate (I wasn't), so I hung up on him. He then call me back to say that hanging up on him was rude... LOL, so is lowballing, you idiot! 😛

lol i hate people like that. i'd put "NO, I AM NOT THAT DESPERATE" in the vehicle description 😛


 
I would not deal outside of ebay. You have no buyer or seller protection that way. Ebay even warns you of this I believe.

eh, just ignore if you don't feel like haggling.

i'd rather get a few lowball offers and then do some haggling, than get none at all! 🙂

Live coral is not illegal to sell. You need special licenses to collect it, but it is not illegal to sell if collected legally. If it were, there would be a ton of illegal stores in California and many other states, because there are a ton of live corals being sold daily at fish stores. Plus this coral was propagated in my tank, from a captive raised colony that has been a few generations in captivity.
