my initial suspect is that the brand new soyo mobo i got today has a dead IDE Channel.

Tried a working WD hdd. Doesn't recognize.
look up support and change all possible jumper settings. doesn't recognize.
try different ide cables. doesn't recognize.

put the hard drive on 2nd IDE and it recognizes.

DEAD IDE1? Probably.

Any ideas for fixes? Other than running IDE2 with a cd / hdd combo?

im so lazy to drive back to Fry's and wont be able to do it till Tuesday.

Have you checked to be sure that both channels are enabled in the BIOS? Try resetting the CMOS (with AC cord unplugged from the wall or it may not take) - I do it with all new mobos just because...

enabled both IDE in bios. Even just enabled Primary. No go.

RMA time... JIC, have you also tried an optical drive on the same 'bad' channel and checked IRQ allocations - IRQ 14 is supposed to be Primary Channel and 15 is Secondary - if it doesn't work when they are allocated to "PCI devices", try setting them to "Reserved"? Those are supposed to be hardwired to the IDE channels, so it really shouldn't make any diff, but... ;)
