I got rubber bands for my braces from my othrodentist and they hurt like a mofo. I don't know how such small rubber bands could cause sooo much pain. What can I take to dull the pain but not be loaded or anything like that? Asprin?

Edit: The rubber band is from my upper right wisdom tooth to my lower right canine. And the band is really small. Maybe 4-5mm in diameter.

Codeine. Tylenol x3. Only wear them at night if you want to have them for 3 years. Otherwise, all the time.

I had to wear rubber bands from my lower left to my upper right; across my mouth, and that hurt so bad. My jaw is crooked, and they were trying to make it staight by doing that. Instead it just pulled my teeth out of socket. Now I have to wear them in a triangle shape on the left side, and double up at night. It sucks muchly... Especially since I've had braces for four years and the doc still says they're doing nothing.

I went through the whole orthodontics experience. Rubber bands ain't nuttin. The head brace while you sleep with the thing to re-align your jaw PLUS dual rubber bands on both sides, now that truly sucks.

Luckily, due to my short roots the dentist only had to torture me for 18 months. It was a record of some sort. And now I have the serious sexy smile. :D

Don't worry. Humans are hardwired to forget what pain feels like. That's why we keep trying to find someone to love. ;)

I remember those. I had my braces on for 6 years, (it was only because I moved a few times during that period and had to switch orthodontists). Just suffer through it, because you'll be really happy with the result.

Thanks SaltBoy for the advice. I took a Kirland brand Asprin, one of those huge 500mg pills. My jaw is feeling alot better! I even got to eat one donut this morning for breakfast!! :)

Has anyone here had to wear those malicious RPEs? Rapid Palatal Expander? They stick this contracption in the roof of your mouth, and every night someone has to reach in there and turn it with a key to expand your mouth... Pure torture. I coudln't even eat most foods without gagging when I had it, and it instigated such horrible headaches upon expansion. Ugh!!!

I only had braces for 11 months. Got them off just in time for high school.

Does that mean you can't open your mouth really wide?

I did back when, execpt mine wasn't every night but every three weeks. For the first few days after every visit, i couldn't eat any solides. It was better then the alternative, removing 4 permanent teeth because my jaw was too small.

On another note, I still think the retainer is the worst invention ever, taking that thing out in public to eat was the bleh. lol

yes, it will hurt each time you get your braces tightened. after a few days it won't become noticeable. i got my braces off just over a year ago and i actually miss the tension (i grind my teeth).

After your braces were removed, did you keep running your tongue over your teeth just because it felt weird? It took me months to adjust to their absence. (the braces, not the teeth) :D

YES! not only that but i used to play the banjo on my elasctics (you know, with my fingers, just tweaking on them) so i would put my fingers in my mouth and inadvertantly gag myself. lol.

lol i had those in 5th grade....

YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO SHOOT THEM!!

when you learn to shoot em, you become like a rubber band sniper. pegging people off every where you go then you shut your mouth and they will never now, once you conqer sniping the bands, you learn to reload quickly, and so forth. i was a PRO ;) :D:p

Lol...I shot them at people when I wore them (wore em twice before, probably have to again at my next appointment :( ), but only after I took them off.

Have you accidentaly clenched your teeth together yet? You will kick yourself when you do. It hurts like you won't believe.

If you don't mind me asking, what are those for? I've seen people use em, but I've never had braces, so I don't really know.
