ugh. Neighbor's house burglarized

Homerboy

Lifer
Came home from baseball practice with my son last night around 8pm and there were 4 cop cars parked on our street. Pull into my driveway and we could see silhouettes of a few people, a K9 and flashlight in our neighbor's yard (2 houses down).

Apparently her house was broken into around 7:15 or so. It doesn't appear that they got away with anything though as the items were all piled up on her table and the cops expect they were in the house when she pulled into her drive around 7:30 or so then had to dash out as she came in (she's a 60yr old single lady).

Here I have about $3000+ worth of stuff sitting in my back room (apparently they got to her house through the backyards as they traced the footprints in the snow). My back room has about 10 windows that all the world can see what's in there. Hell my wife and daughter were in that back room at 7:15pm too watching TV.

This sucks.

Did your neighbor have a home alarm? Do you?

Not that I believe they magically make you safe, but it is often enough to deter smash and grab thieves. I pay what comes out to be 13 bucks a month.

I will look into it now most likely.
At the very least into those fake signs you can buy on ebay 🙂

Time to get an home alarm system installed, it will help with the home owners insurance as well.

I like to have motion activated flood lights on the back of the house. And I do not mean a single 75 watt light bulb, more like 2 flood lights that can light up the WHOLE backyard.

One house I lived in, I had a motion activated light on the front of the house and the back. If anything stepped off the street and onto my yard, the light would go off.

my neighbor has a motion sensor light in his driveway but its pointed straight at the street and goes off every few mins from the wind. its quite annoying to drive pass his house when the light is on because you are momentarily blinded around a curve.

i would like to put a motion sensor flood light, but i need a better one because I dont want to light up the street and bother other people, nor do i want it going off because of a squirrel fart.

Sounds like the sensor is not adjusted properly. I played with my lights sensor for about an hour or so before I got it just right.

Mine was set so that someone driving down the street would not set it off, or even walking on the edge of the street. But once someone walked 5 - 10 feet into my yard, then it would go off.

The backyard was a lot more sensitive then the front yard. There was an empty lot behind my house, so I wanted the lights to turn on if someone got close to my yard. The empty field had a bunch of weeds, so I tried to set the sensor to go off if someone was walking close to my fence. It makes things bad when the owners of empty lots will not keep the grass mowed, it gives the thieves places to hide.

Backyard motion sensor lights are good, but they may trigger to much on wild animals walking / running around. Like deer, rabbits, groundhogs, cats, dogs. Squirrels and birds will not trigger it most times. Do not put an alarm sign out front. All that does is tell the potential burglar what alarm system you have, then he knows what he needs to do to silence it. And more often than not, they will cut your telephone wire so the alarm can't connect to the monitoring service.

I remember a cop writing that those home alarm systems are completely worthless and having dog (multiple ones even better) were more effective.

He's responded to tons of those alarms and they never work.

Make sure its a little yippy dog. Big mean looking dogs that don't bark are worthless. Seasoned burglars always bring a treat for dogs which will always stop big dogs. Yippy loud dogs are way more of a deterrence.

Or get a big, mean looking dog that barks. My dog has the "I will eat you" look and sound when she's in defense mode.
