Ugh. Laid off 6 weeks into the job

Graduated college in late May.

Started job July 5.

Got $15,000 pre-tax signing bonus July 15.

Whole group was laid off August 23. Two months severance.

I'm lucky I didn't sign an apartment lease yet.

Oh well. I've got a shit-load of vacation money.
 
I wouldn't assume you're guaranteed a new job. Go nuts the week or so before you start your next job, otherwise you are gambling.
 
what are you talking about, OP can go on vacation as soon as he gets through with the line and submits the paperwork at the unemployment office.

but you made bank, honestly.

Think of it this way...

I worked for three years, got laid off with one month severance.

You worked for 6 weeks, got a signing bonus and got 2 months severance.

I think you would rather be in your shoes than mine.

BTW....it's a pretty bad market out there, so spend money wisely.
 
TBH, if I were you, I'd suck the teat of the American government through the use of unemployment checks. Take your fifteen grand and use it here and there while paying for everything with unemployment checks.

Would 6 weeks qualify for unemployment? Also, I think they take severance pay into account. When i was laid off, they said I had to wait a month due to my severance.

Unemployment checks require trying to locate work and able to work.

Difficult to do when on a cruise or sunning it down in the Caribbean.

Best to try and find work ASAP. It is harder the longer you are out.

The OP didn't work long enough to qualify for unemployment benefits. They're USUALLY based on the first 4 of the last 5 quarters...so his recent employment won't even count.
 
Employer must suck to throw a $15k bonus at someone, then dump the entire unit. It just never came up in meetings between HR, managers, etc. that they may be disbanding the entire team within, oh, 6-8 weeks?
 
If you only worked 6 weeks and have no other work experience you may get screwed out of unemployment.

Normally you have to have worked a certain number of weeks or made a certain amount of money.

At least you are getting severance. Good luck with the job hunt.

Depends on the state. In CT you don't need to be looking for a job, you just need to say you are when you call in for your check each week.

Again, depends on the state. Here in CT it is based on the average gross salary of the highest two of the last six quarters.
