Ugh, jeez, what happened to the music industry? Blech.

I was just upstairs (away from my computer? Yes, I had to check the networked printer 🙂), and I happened to see Britney Spears "performing" on ABC. WTH happened to the music industry? Since it's all about the image and not about the music anymore, the music sucks, and the image is borderline softcore pr0n. Why doesn't she just quit the lipsync crap and make pr0n flics? And all those corporate-cookie-cutter boybands can bite me as well. :|
Maybe that's just the nonconformist in me flaring up, but those groups/people do suck. 😛

Killbat, I agree - however, music seems cyclic. Bands like the Monkees were also manufactured for mass consumption. Let's hope this phase ends sooner rather than later.

I know what happened.

I was 14 years old... it was the summer of 1982, I think.

Video Killed the Radio Star, Video Killed the Radio Star...

Didn't it ever strike you as incredibly ironic that was the very first video to play on MTV? Me and my droogies sat there, transifixed to the screen.

Video Killed the Radio Star, Video Killed the Radio Star...

Yup. That's what happened alright...

Well, what do you expect from ABC? Do you think they are going to waste their precious prime time to give some lesser known "quality" artist the spotlight?

I agree Killbat!
Plus they can't sing for sh!t!

btw, I can see Deeko coming in here VERY shortly 😉

<< ? And all those corporate-cookie-cutter boybands can bite me as well. >>

Well-said, actually, it can be traced back to Eisner being made CEO of Disney, he has setup a music program, and you will find all these squeeky-clean, cookie-cutter groups are owned by disney. They are getting the program setup to where they can scoop up some freshfaces, put them together, mass-market them, and instantly they are popular, whether they are talented or not. These mass-produced bands bring instant cash, and the music gets more and more stale, and generic with every album. Look at NSYNC, there is nothing new there, they sound like a commercial (you know that music that sounds so generic it cant be real) and people just yuk it up. The days of the garage band being discovered, and new talent popping up is over. Bands are manufactured now. Boycott disney products, if you can.

<< Why doesn't she just quit the lipsync crap and make pr0n flics? >>

she probably will, after disney dumps her *ss, and she cant even do 1-800-collect commercials, and the movies will still sell like hotcakes. I, for one, am looking forward to this if it happens...

Her voice is remarkably bad. I sort of feel sorry for the little thing. She's cute, she's sexy, but....

I mean... for me, turning 30 was a wonderful epiphany....

What will it be like for her? I can't see her as a mature woman with any class at this point. Maybe, but the way she is going now... she's going to be embarrassed by her incredibly bad taste eventually.

It would be different if she could sing.... talent can be forgiven youthful folly... Heck, I can sing better than her, without a doubt!

Oh man...this thread is just ASKING for me. 🙂

Killbat, I would like to see go up on stage and do the things they do. Britney DOES actually sing on stage about half the time....and sure you can say that that isn't good, but she is dancing dude..what do rock guys do, they jump around on stage WOOHOO that takes talent. And boybands DO sing....they very rarely lipsync. And any of you who still think that boybands are manufacured, after all that went on a few weeks ago, and all the proof I showed, you are either a hard headed idiot, or you didn't read it 🙂

<< you know that music that sounds so generic it cant be real >>

What kind of music do you listen to? I can distinctly tell the difference between different boybands, even different boyband members. Yet if I listen to 2 distinctly different rock bands, I won't know the difference. It all sounds the same to me. I know that it isn't the same, but I don't listen to it, so it seems the same to me.

Look, we don't need to get into this huge argument again, we all know that I am right and you ALL are wrong 🙂

Wanna bet that if I posted 3 different rock and roll songs you couldnt pick the 2 that were by the same band truthfully? 🙂

Television is only going to feature the highest-profile performers. Otherwise no one will watch.

But I think there's an enormous amount of good music being made. Why not try buying a few used CDs of artists you've never heard of before, maybe you'll find something new that you like. All the good music doesn't make it onto the radio, perhaps less now than ever with the concentration of so many radio stations in the hands of fewer owners.

"WTH happened to the music industry?"

All the guys that can actually write, compose/arrange, play and sing are in their mid fifties! Too tired to compete with the punks. But when they come out of hibernation, people sit up and take notice! Uh... WORD!

Maybe the real question is: In 30 years, will a release of any of the boybands' #1 hits be the #1 album.....for a month straight? Will Britney have that kind of staying power? I doubt it.......

All the modern boybands are just like the new kids on the block. They're mass marketed and will be popular for a while until some new trend comes along. I wonder what the new trend will be?

Ever notice how when the individual members of the "boy bands" are alone they look really dumb and out of place. The backend boys are the ugliest group. Remember when one of them was on who wants to be a millionaire... what an idiot.

Ah, I agree with the cycle theory to a degree, I mean most of the older 1950's songs were "boy + girl = good" when you get right down to it. But at least they played their own instruments for the most part. Right now I'm listening to The Moody Blues second album (you'll never catch me calling an album a CD) 'In Search Of Lost Chord' and thinking that there is nothing around today that is as consistantly thought provoking. I share Killbat's hatred of "pop" music, it's pure drivel, and musically rather boring, my favorite groups all have distinctive sounds. For example, RUSH always sounds like RUSH even if all their songs are not in the same genre, the same holds true for groups like STYX, The Moody Blues, Steely Dan, and even the rare new group such as the Barenaked Ladies. Overall, I'm just waiting for all these pop legends who survive by selling themselves as sex objects to get their first wrinkle and grey hair. I want to see how fast they end up in the "where are they now" files.

ForeverSilky, you're the one who didn't know what Billboard is, I deem you not worthy of arguing with me on this! 🙂 j/k

nippyjun, that was Lance from NSync, genius 🙂 Lance would never be able to go solo, he's a bass. of the "big three", the only ones that I think could go solo successfully are Brian Littrel, Justin Timberlake, and JC Chasez.
