ugh... I'm sick of jailbreak issues

I decided tonight would be a good night to upgrade to 4.1 and jailbreak. I thought it would be quick and easy, but 3 hours later and I'm having to start completely over.

First, when it was updating to 4.1 it failed the verification because my internet had a hiccup. This was just the verification, it was already downloaded. Anyway, it failed and got stuck in DFU mode which forced a restore. Fuck you Apple... I shouldn't need net access to upgrade.

Then I get jailbroken and start reinstalling all of my apps one by one. Eventually I installed infinifolders which refused to work. It put all of my apps in the folders I had before, but now when I tap the folder I get only a black screen. No big deal, I'll just uninstall it. Oh wait, my cydia app is in the folder that can't open and there's only one way to uninstall jailbroken apps.

So now I'm redoing everything... again. I'm so sick of this shit.

you are sick of 4.1? cool i will not upgrade.

but really i've never had any issues with my ipod4 and 4.1

or 4.0.1 and iphone4(x2)
or 3.2.1 and ipad 3g

You are clearly doing it wrong if you aren't using tinyumbrella and a local copy of your ipsw ;) verification is not necessary over the internet. that sounds kind of a rookie move there dude.

I'm tethering via USB. Works fine on my Mac and my Win 7 machine. However, I can't make the iPhone a WiFi access point like you can with jailbreaking.

It's these sorts of headaches that have made me avoid jailbreaking, and the fact that early jailbreaking methods could even brick the phone. I'm told that bricking is no longer a worry, but the headaches still do seem to exist.

I'm kinda looking for a reason to jailbreak anyway nonetheless. I just haven't really found one yet. ;)

Agreed. There's really very little left that I feel I even need/want to jailbreak for. I'm jailbroken mainly so I can tether, and use NotifiedApp. But once the iPhone gets better notifications I probably won't even bother.

I still have plenty of reasons to JB .. but I am not going to come around here and start whining about it. If he's so sick of it then just stop doing it.

My main reasons ..

Lockinfo
BiteSMS
SBSettings
TetherME
Activator
ShaketoUndo

Why not use Spotlight to launch cydia? Or restart in safemode? Just sounds like someone that doesn't know what they are doing.

then stop jailbreaking.

Exactly. I love how so many people talk about how great their iWhatever is and then the first thing they do when they get it is jailbreak it so they can make it work how they really want...

Well.. arguably any geek is going to do that with whatever they purchase. My wife is completely happy with her iPhone and has no reason to need to jailbreak, same with her computer.. yet, whether it's Windows or OS X or Linux.. I'm going to hack the heck out of it to make it personal to me.

True, although I've gotten away from that as I get older just because I don't feel like dealing with all of the work. I did root my android phone and installed Wifi Tether, although I have yet to actually use it so it was pretty pointless so far.

My main gripe is how all of the jailbreaking and hackintosh talk is ok here and yet if anyone asks about violating some other software agreements the thread gets locked and they get issued a warning. Why is Apple so special?

I guess I'm glad I never updated my iphone 4 ios... took me 2-3 minutes to jailbreak and I have had little to no issues at all.

I don't jailbreak, and I don't really mind. I've experimented with it several times and ended up deciding that it's not worth it.

I jailbroke it because I thought I wanted sbsettings and tethering abilities. But after awhile, I was like I hardly use any of these. So I undid the jailbreak. However, my modem firmware is saved so I can unlock it :)

It just sounded like another step that I didn't need. I don't need it unlocked so I don't need to keep the baseband. The only problem I had was due to my internet having a problem at the worst possible time, and then it was a really stupid oversight on cydia to not have a way to get to it from settings or something.

Whatever, it's up and running now though I've had to skip infinifolders for now.

I've said time and time again that the iphone is only as good as the jailbreak community makes it. Yes it's okay vanilla for most people, but it's true that the hackers make it better. Apple makes some great hardware, but is always gimped by the software in some way.

Yeah. Learned that the hard way too (albeit a different problem - in my case cydia had a corrupted database and wouldn't run).

First thing you should always do when jailbreaking is install OpenSSH, so that you can use the command line to install/uninstall/repair stuff.

Since I use it on T-Mo, I need to unlock it. Ergo, I need to JB it. I do also like certain added features like SBSettings. However, I will agree that jailbreaking can be a pain at times and especially now with iOS 4+.

I just got a Nexus One, so the above will be moot soon. :)

Yea.. I'm getting more and more like that.

As for the software EULAs, yea, that doesn't make much sense. I don't frequent many other parts of the forum, so I haven't experienced that. I would think as long as your motives aren't for piracy, then it should be acceptable to discuss it. Maybe it's because Apple isn't prosecuting people over it, and other companies have? I don't know..

IMO jailbreaking your phone is the same as breaking WGA, the reasons are irrelevant because both are technically violations of the agreements. If Anand wants to let people talk about one, we should be able to talk about all of them. Obviously posting links to pirated torrents and shit shouldn't be allowed and there would have to be some judgement calls on certain topics, but allowing free discussion of hackintosh while condemning Windows piracy just seems f'd up to me.

Jailbroke my 2G MC model touch today with greenpoison. Went through without a hitch. If you ever get stuck in recovery mode again don't restore, download RecBoot and run the Exit.bat file. It will kick the ipod out of recovery mode exactly where you left it before. :)

I've been using 4.1 jailbroken since this weekend (got my iphone on friday jailbroke it saturday lol) and it's been working great so far. I've got infinifolders on it too and that is working fine as well.
