SPRINGFIELD ? The state Senate voted Saturday to raise Illinois taxes by more than $5 billion as Democrats groped for ways of generating money to reduce a massive budget deficit and avert deep cuts to government services.

The proposal would raise the personal income tax rate from 3 percent to 5 percent and the corporate rate from 4.8 percent to 5 percent.

It would increase a tax credit for people who pay property taxes, offering about $700 million in tax relief, supporters said. It would also cushion the blow of the higher income taxes by increasing the personal exemption and tripling a tax break for the working poor.

ugh going from 3% to 5%? wow what a jump.

Well, the only options were to increase taxes, or fire every teacher and policeman in the state.

Oh, and increase gambling in the state.

Not that another Chicago Alderman was indicted last week on federal fraud and bribery charges...

Or the Chicago sales tax that was raised last year to "increase hospital funding" - where hospital funding has not actually raised one cent since. Guess what *has* been raised since the increase? Government salaries...

The people should be taxed for what they spend. It is only natural. If they want lower taxes, they should spend less.

The higher inflation would force people to pay even more taxes in a consumption tax scenario. Heaven forbid the government just cut back and spend less. The problem is cities like Chicago have too many illegally hired employees who do not even speak english. Send those people back to where ever they came from and hire out-of-work Americans.

P.S. I live in Illinois.

Yeah.. like there is absolutely NOTHING they can cut in Illinois. The government is 100% lean, absolutely cut to the bone. Not a single penny of waste or overspending in ANY of their programs. Only option is to raise taxes.

Medicare, unemployment, and welfare are things that can be cut. Cutting those programs will always be better than laying off teachers or raising taxes.

Story fails to state cause of lack of state revenue.

Oh yeah, the disatrous economic policies of the last 8 years.

So, thank Bush for tax increase.

Contracts are such a fucking mess in Illinois. Basically, it's pay to play. If you donate money to the Governor's campaign re-election fund (which he can use for personal use after paying for his re-election), you get a contract. It has nothing to do with competence. Plus, the state has the tendency to contract out for the highest dollar possible, not the lowest.

I love Chicago to death, but fuck, this state is pretty screwed up.

Uh... seriously? Il and Chicago have had higher taxes for a long time. They've always been a joke, economically and they've been lead by your D's for a long time now. Get a fucking clue.

3 to 5 is a damned huge increase. Most of the states are doing this now. fvck them

Isn't that what they do in your native Canada though?
Why do you think I don't live in Canada anymore? I have to apologize, apparently high taxes just happen to follow me around.

Wow, now that is bad even for you, techs.

Wow, that's AMAZING

All we had to do to correct our budget deficit was to blame Bush! We're in the black now 😀

They've also been throwing around a possible plan to offset the tax hikes, by implementing a sales tax "holiday" where stores would stop collecting sales tax for a couple days in August... but even that plan would be offset again by higher fees businesses would pay to the state throughout the rest of the year.

More complicated government oversight is always the solution!

And once again a single guy without any children and no mortgage like me gets shafted. Wonderful.

Our governor's new plans today will cut off health care to seniors.

Of all the wasteful spending in government, it is this that he will cut first.

If I were running the state, I'd reduce the pension plans state employees receive. But the problem with this is the government employees are unionized... Gee, who thought that would be a good idea...

The government cries "Budget cuts will put thousands in unemployment." My response would be "Tax hikes will put tens of thousands in unemployment!"

Don't seniors already receive Medicare/medicaid? Why do they need state assistance as well?

"but think of the seniors" has become the new "but think of the children"
