I always thought people like you were just whiny pussies.

Then I quit smoking.

As an asshole former smoker I agree with this.

As for the OP question - because I was an impressionable youth when I was 11-14 (back in 1990ish), my friends did it, and I got addicted, just like practically everyone else I know. It didn't help that my mom was also nearly hopelessly addicted and smoked 2 packs a day.

Nicotine is a hell of a drug.

As for why people continue to smoke - just about everyone who smokes cigarettes regularly (approaching and beyond about a half pack a day) is also quite addicted to it. As an asshole former smoker who has gotten over the hump and quit, I find it hard to understand why everyone else still smoking doesn't do this. It really is as simple as just not smoking anymore.

I agree, smoking rooms are nasty. Last trip to Vegas they tried to put us in a smoking room, we decided to wait ~2 hours while they finished cleaning a non-smoking room and they comped us some $$$$ to use while waiting

I want to know how people way back when didn't know it probably wasn't wise to inhale smoke, seems pretty damn obvious. And smokers stink as well

My parents smoked when I was a kid (they subsequently quit) and I was so disgusted by it, I never had any desire or interest in smoking.

Congrats on giving it up.

I get a major headache when I go into rooms like that. I would rather be in a room with a person actually smoking in front of me than that old, stale smoke smell. Nobody knows this.

I sat next to a guy on the plane who was visiting the AFB for a reunion. Offered him a ride to his hotel but his luggage never made it from SF.

It was good times a couple days ago when Biden was in. I work in the building that contains the control tower and passenger terminal. 10 highway patrol cars out front and secret service crawling everywhere. Weeeeee!

You know... you just gained over 9000 respect from me just by saying that. It's amazing how oblivious smokers actually are.
It's more amazing how much non-smokers bitch about smokers. When I smoked, and everyone I know that does smoke, goes well out of their way to smoke away from everyone else. Of course, it's legislated in most places, but still... I only smoked in my car, in my house, or outside. All smokers I know do this.

But if a smoker even smells like smoke, a non-smoke will bitch an moan like no tomorrow. Not to mention all the dirty looks like you offended their heritage and pissed on their child's head.

Yup, I did too. It's not far enough away. The only real way to keep it away, is to not smoke. It stays with you long after, and has been pointed out - stale horrible old smoke-linger is worse than currently generated smoke.

It's a righteous odor, gratz on not smoking anymore btw.

Of the few smokers I know, none of them smoke indoors. That's just a whole other level.

Yes it is, coming from an ex regular smoker, roomed in college with a few other guys, we came up with the wise idea that we'd all smoke indoors, how convenient. Needless to say, the whole apartment should have just been nuked from orbit to make sure the smell went away after we moved out.

Now I just smoke occasionally, and do it outside. Not even in the car anymore. But the thing is at this point, you might as well just quit altogether at this point, which is what I'm considering.

If we legislate odors, we should add to the list: too much perfume/cologne, people who don't bathe enough, and sweat (ever sat next to someone who works outdoors in the heat?). I'm sure there's at least a dozen other offensive smells. :p

Thanks! Being able to smell smokers I agree, it's strong... Smokers have no idea how strong until they quit.

Too much perfume/old lady perfume is a sin indeed. It's at least as bad. BO, esp nasty nasty roofer/landscaper BO is damn bad too.

Three scents I can no longer take at all (i.e. I'll leave if I smell them)-

burning eggs. My brother burns the shit out of scrambled eggs and its a very bad odor.

burning butter - this comes from working in an italian restaurant/pizza shop. Its something that is unmistakable to me and I gag.

Gin. For totally different reasons lol

LOL.

This coming from a guy who's too stupid to understand that evolution is fact.

you do realize that evolution doesn't cancel out creationism right? the two can co-exist. although i'm not sure if the OP realizes that either, i don't stalk him like you seem to.

why hasn't evolution killed off all the smokers yet? you would think it would.

Err, I don't seem to recall mentioning creationism in my post?

Evolution and creationism can coexist, because evolution doesn't theorise the origin of life. But no, idiot OP doesn't understand this.

When I met my first wife, she smoked. She wanted to go out with me but I wouldn't go out with her because of the smoking. She quit, we got together and eventually got married. She'd sneak one once in a while and I'd jump her shit.

Eventually, we divorced and I moved to another state. She remarried and had to come here for business so I let her and her new husband stay at my place. One evening the three of us were sitting outside and her and her husband were smoking. She told me she never understood why I was so against smoking. I told her it was because I didn't want to spend my life with someone that cared so little about our relationship that she would try to slowly kill herself. Plus, I didn't want to spend my retirement years wiping her ass as she was dying of cancer. She said: "well, you never explained it to me like that before."

She continued to smoke for another 25 years. Up till last Friday anyway.
She died Friday at age 54 from lung cancer.

Last room left at the hotel. It wreaks.

I can see starting to smoke when the hazards weren't as well known, but why would anyone smoke today?
