OK, on a 56k I wait several hours for the demo to Nascar Legends to download (a 25 meg file). It sits on my desktop, I double click on it, and an error pops up. In the title it says "PackageForTheWeb Error" and the error is "General Failure reading this package." Now what the fvck does that mean!? Anyone know how i fix this?

PackageForTheWeb is a wrapper/archiver, try unziping it with winzip or another general archiver, it usually works.

pulpp, good suggestion, but when I opened winzip and tried to extract it, it extracted a few files then stopped and gave an error. The log doesn't show anything abnormal. If I double click on the setup.exe while in winzip, it tries for a minute and then gives that "general error" again.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Yes, yobarman, thanks for your insite. Can't you find a different thread to say stuff like that? I'm trying to get help here.:|

Have you run a virus scan recently, johnjohn? General Failure errors are sometimes associated with viral infestation.

Another feeble suggestion: you might delete the contents of your Windows/Temp directory, then try again to launch the file.

it could've just been a transmission error, where one of the 200 million bits accidentally became a 0 instead of 1, or vice versa. Try d/l'ing it again (I know it's slow painful, try to do it overnight).

WombatWoman, I have DirectX 8. Looking at my Windows/Temp Folder, (which I have never done before) deleting it makes me nervous. What all is in there? Sure looks like a lot of exe's, log's, and dll's. Are you sure about this?

johnjohn, I have cleared out my Temp folder umpteen times, and have never had any problems. If this makes you nervous, why not copy the contents elsewhere (temporarily, heh) until you are certain that everything is OK?

installation programs and zip files tend to leave stuff there, included may be exe's, dll's, and other such files. when they aren't closed properly (or sometimes when they are), the contents don't get deleted as they should. As Wombat said, emptying the folder should cause no ill effects.

OK, I tried deleting the Temp files, still no luck. I ran virus scan, no viruses. I should also mention that I've done all the basic stuff, running Scandisk and restarting and freeing up RAM and all that jazz. Nothing.

I'm currently downloading again. *SIGH*

10% done. Woo-hoo. Only 3 more hours to go.

Why not post the url for the download and let somebody like me download the file and see if it works. It would only take five minutes. Um, I know that must be painful, but I just want to help. :D

I downloaded it, and it ran fine on my computer. I think you might have to do it again, sorry... :( I remember dealing with that on dialup, and its very frustrating to say the least.

Man I must have been a couple of minutes too early to see Girl Friday's confirmation. I did the Sweden download which pulled 128 KB/sec as opposed to 6KB on the us sites. The demo also works for me.
